Can A Luxury Wellness Retreat Really Fix Burnout? Our Beauty Editor Checked In To Find Out

There comes a point where your body starts whispering before it eventually screams. For me, it arrived somewhere between answering emails at midnight, forgetting what day it was, and surviving almost entirely on caffeine and cortisol instead of deep sleep. I wasn’t looking for a hardcore wellness retreat involving silence, celery juice and enforced enlightenment. I simply wanted to feel like myself again.
As someone who arrived exhausted and emotionally overcaffeinated, I left Thailand feeling lighter, clearer, and noticeably calmer. Not “fixed” but reset enough to hear myself think again. And personally, that’s more than enough.

Sri Panwa
So, when the opportunity arose to experience a BDMS (Asia’s premier preventive healthcare facility) wellness retreat at Sri Panwa in Phuket, Thailand, I booked the flight before I even considered how my five kids would fend for themselves (guilty mum vibes).
Perched high above Cape Panwa on Phuket’s quieter south-eastern tip, Sri Panwa has long held a reputation as one of Thailand’s most glamorous luxury resorts, loved by A-listers. But beneath the infinity pools and impossibly beautiful views lies something more restorative: a place that quietly encourages you to slow down without ever forcing it upon you.
And for someone fast-paced and deeply uncomfortable with “switching off”, that turned out to be exactly what I needed.
The Escape
The first thing you notice upon arrival is the stillness. Not silence exactly, but a kind of calm that feels increasingly rare. The ocean stretches endlessly below you, the villas disappear into lush jungle greenery, and suddenly your nervous system starts relaxing before you’ve even checked in.
My villa felt less like a hotel room and more like a private sanctuary. Huge open spaces, natural textures, warm woods, and floor-to-ceiling glass created that seamless indoor-outdoor living Thailand does so beautifully. There was a private infinity pool overlooking the Andaman Sea, oversized day beds made for afternoon reading, and a bathroom so spa-like I briefly considered never leaving it. And honestly? You don’t really have to.

One of the most luxurious things about Sri Panwa, apart from the fact that every single room has its own private pool, is that there’s no pressure to “do” wellness. There’s no militant schedule pinned to your door. No 5 am boot camps. No wellness guilt. If you want to spend the entire day in your villa journaling, swimming, and ordering beautifully nourishing food to your room by friendly staff, nobody bats an eyelid.
But if you do want to lean into the wellness side of things, the offering is extensive.
The Amenities
My retreat began with a full consultation with the resident doctor- less intimidating medical assessment, more thoughtful deep dive into how I was actually functioning. We spoke at length about stress, sleep quality, energy levels, hormones, nutrition, and burnout symptoms. It felt refreshingly personalised rather than prescriptive. Instead of handing me a generic wellness checklist, the focus was on understanding how modern stress had gradually depleted my system.
From there, I was recommended a tailored IV drip designed to support hydration, energy, and recovery. I’ll admit I was sceptical. IV therapy can often feel like another wellness buzzword reserved for exhausted celebrities and overworked CEOs. But lying back in a quiet treatment room overlooking tropical greenery while vitamins and hydration slowly worked their way into my bloodstream felt surprisingly restorative. Whether placebo or science, within hours I noticed the fog lifting.

The spa itself deserves its own mention. Treatments here are deeply rooted in Thai healing traditions but delivered with a modern luxury touch. Think deeply therapeutic massages, herbal compress rituals and calming oils infused with lemongrass and jasmine. After one beachside massage, accompanied only by crashing waves and warm sea breeze, I genuinely forgot where my phone was for almost an entire afternoon.
Yoga is available almost constantly, which suits both beginners and committed wellness devotees alike. Morning classes overlooking the ocean became one of the highlights of my stay. There’s something deeply humbling about moving your body slowly while surrounded by jungle and sea rather than fluorescent lighting and London traffic noise.
And then there’s the food.
The Food
One of my biggest hesitations about wellness retreats has always been the food deprivation aspect. I have absolutely no interest in spending five days pretending steamed vegetables are exciting. Thankfully, Sri Panwa approaches wellness differently. Meals are tailored to your preferences and health goals, but never in a restrictive or joyless way.
Breakfasts featured vibrant tropical fruit, protein-rich Thai dishes, and freshly pressed juices, while dinners still felt indulgent and luxurious. Fresh seafood, fragrant Thai curries, nourishing salads and beautifully balanced dishes meant you could eat well without ever feeling punished. It’s wellness without the martyrdom.
What surprised me most, however, was how quickly nature recalibrated me. The combination of sea air, jungle surroundings and uninterrupted sunsets created an almost immediate shift in perspective. I slept deeply for the first time in months. My shoulders dropped. My thoughts slowed down.
Burnout doesn’t disappear after a few yoga classes and an IV drip, of course. But what Sri Panwa offered was something perhaps more valuable: space.
Located just 20 minutes from Phuket International Airport, Baba Beach Club offers instant escapism along a quieter, lesser-known stretch of the Andaman Sea. Created by the same team behind Sri Panwa, this property combines design-led luxury with a more music-focused energy.

Baba Beach
Here, wellness comes with a little more energy. Think morning boxing sessions by the beach, deeply restorative massages in the open-air, long walks along powder-soft white sands and cocktails (many non-alcoholic choices) soundtracked by low-tempo sunset sets.
Unlike the chaotic party scenes Phuket is often associated with, this is a far more curated experience. The resort’s Baba Loop series is renowned for bringing together international and regional DJs in a chic, controlled setting that feels stylish rather than overwhelming.
It’s ideal for those who struggle to completely power down the high-functioning burnout crowd who need movement, noise (within reason!) alongside mindfulness.

The beauty of both properties is that they recognise modern burnout isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some people need silence and green juice. Others need ocean swims, music, movement and somewhere beautiful enough to finally exhale.
