Desert Island Dishes

Finding out what people would choose as their last meal on earth is one of our past-time favourites. In a slightly less morbid version, chef Margie Broadhead asks the likes of Liz Earle, Jo Elvin, Levi Roots, Mark Hix and Thomasina Miers the dishes that have shaped their lives and the dishes they would eat when they couldn’t eat anything else.

After each episode Margie then takes one of the dishes to create her own recipe which you can find on the website. You’ll find a watermelon Greek salad inspired by Melissa Hemsley, a caramelised banana brûlée inspired by Annabel Karmel and the world’s best tomato sauce courtesy of Ruth Rogers.

BBC Food Podcasts

There’s three BBC foodie podcasts we’ll mention here, each covering different elements of the stuff that we eat. The BBC Good Food Podcast is hosted by Miriam Nice and Nadiya Ziafat as they explore and debate the best dishes and amazing festive food traditions. The Food Programme is slightly more formal fare, investigating every facet of what arrives on our plates, and is more about the quality and production of food and our food industry. The Food Chain is similar, exploring the science and business of food, and all three shows will make you all the wiser to the enormous and complex food ecosystem.

Food Behind Bars

This eight part podcast centres around the simple question: what kind of food do you get in prison? Host Lucy Vincent who runs a charity also called Food Behind Bars, delves into the world of food that those in jail receive, and how it can be improved. Vincent, and her charity, believes that the meals prisoners receive aren’t healthy and enough, and while they’re behind bars, should still receive better quality food to maintain a decent standard of living. It’s a fairly short listen, but still an enlightening one.
