Red light therapy has been having a moment for a while now, but most of the devices I have come across are either eye-wateringly expensive or so bulky they end up gathering dust in a drawer. So when I spotted BON CHARGE’s Red Light Face Wand, a compact, handheld option at £99.99, I was curious. It promises brighter, smoother-looking skin using targeted red light, warmth and sonic vibration, all in a device small enough to use in minutes. Here is how I got on:

What sets it apart

Unlike a full-face LED mask, which can feel like a commitment, this is a wand you glide over specific areas: jawline, under eyes, cheeks, forehead and smile lines. It combines four technologies in one: 660nm red light, 850nm near-infrared light, sonic vibration and gentle heat. The red and near-infrared light support skin tone, texture and radiance, while the vibration offers a facial massage-like effect and the warmth makes the whole thing feel like a treatment rather than a chore.

It is lightweight, charges via USB-C in around two hours, and is small enough to travel with. The top of the wand also swivels out to form a T-shape, with the light touch-activated (something that can take a minute to get used to). After use, you simply swivel it back to create a single, straight line that protects the device while travelling.

Results-wise, the numbers speak for themselves. BON CHARGE reports that 96% of users noticed even skin tone and sculpting, 55% reported improvements in elasticity, texture and fine lines, and 71% saw noticeable benefits within weeks.

If you’re interested in trying red light therapy, but don’t want to fork out hundreds of quid, this is is a great entry-level option.

How it works

As someone who prefers a more minimalist skincare routine, I was pleased to learn that this tool doesn’t require much (read: any) ‘prep’. To start, simply cleanse your skin, then glide the wand gently across your face and neck, focusing on the areas you want to target.

The treatment feels calming, with gentle heat and the sonic vibration being something you actually look forward to as part of a relaxing wind-down routine.

For optimum results, it’s recommended to use the wand for 5-10 minutes, multiple times a week – this just so happens to be the same amount of time it takes me to drink a herbal tea while watching Slow Horses.

With consistency playing such a big role in the success of this device, I had to remind myself to use it. My top tip? Incorporate it into your daily routine.

The results

As someone who is new to red light therapy, the most noticeable difference was the overall radiance and how my skin looked after a few weeks of regular use. It is not a dramatic, overnight transformation, and I would be wary of any device that promises that. But with consistent use, my skin looked brighter and felt smoother, particularly around my cheeks and jawline.

The wand is small and precise enough to target that tricky area without tugging at delicate skin, which is something larger devices struggle with. I found this particularly helpful for treating a perfectly-timed blemish, located just above my lip in the days before my wedding.

The verdict

At £99.99, this is not the cheapest beauty device on the market – red light tools famously aren’t – but it is significantly more accessible than many full-face LED masks, which can run into the hundreds. I particularly like how practical it is, especially for travel, and that you can do a treatment in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea.

Would I recommend it? Yes, if you are curious about red light therapy but do not want to commit to a bulky mask or a clinic-level price tag. Of course, it will not replace a good skincare routine, but it is a great addition to help support your skin over time.

With consistent use, my skin looked brighter and felt smoother, particularly around my cheeks and jawline.
