In partnership with The Luna Cinema

If you’ve ever dreamt of watching The Greatest Showman with a backdrop of Royal Hospital Chelsea, longed to gaze in awe as Johnny Castle swings Baby through the air at Longleat, or even, quiver as the thrilling Knives Out sequences unfold at the iconic Westminster Abbey, then your dreams might just come true this summer. And you’ve got The Luna Cinema to thank for just that.

The Luna Cinema, in partnership with American Express, is putting on quite the show this year, packed with a summer programme that promises to be its best year yet.

Running until 3rd October, they’ll be hosting over 175 screenings at more than 50 immaculate locations across the UK this year. And now that the weather is finally looking up (hurrah!), who wouldn’t want to while away their days watching their favourite scenes unravel in some of the UK’s finest alfresco settings?

They’ll be pitching up at three London locations this week! Read on to find out more…

We’ll start with the basics shall we… What does The Luna Cinema experience entail?

To put it simply, The Luna Cinema brings all of your favourite aspects from a cinema experience, outside. And it works great! They’ve been doing this since George Wood first founded the company in 2008 after the success of a Some Like It Hot screening at Dulwich Park. Since then, they’ve become the UK’s largest producer of outdoor cinema events, pretty impressive huh?

Despite everything that’s gone on over the last year, 2021 is set to be their biggest year yet. Expect giant outdoor screenings of your favourite films in some of the most glamorous locations that the country has to offer.

Guests are invited to bring picnic blankets and chairs, or they can vamp up their experience by swapping their general admission ticket for an optional seated upgrade, where you can use a Luna director’s chair. For those wanting an even bougier experience, they can opt for a Luna Luxe ticket, offering two people the chance to cosy up on a sofa with blankets, heaters, a sharing hamper of food, bottle of bubbly and a cup of Häagen-Dazs ice-cream.

For those celebrating a special occasion at Luna, they’ve also introduced the ‘Summer of Surprise’ invitation this year, where guests can nominate themselves to receive a special treat at the screening, from a complimentary drink to a VIP upgrade.

What venues are taking part?

With 50 venues across the UK taking part, there’s no excuse not to experience the ultimate alfresco cinema experience this summer.

Let’s start with the London locations as this week they’ll be taking over not one, not two but three London venues! This week, 22nd – 25th July, sees The Luna Cinema pitch up at Hampton Court Palace, Kenwood House and Clapham Common, a new location for 2021, bringing the magic of cinema closer to you. Screenings include Notting Hill, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, plus a The Greatest Showman sing-a-long!

For a royally approved evening, try a night at Hampton Court Palace or Kensington Palace, where you’ll gaze up at both the big screen and the striking palaces in the background. London’s Westminster Abbey will once again welcome guests to experience the open air cinema in its 800 year old setting, while Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre will be putting on screenings too.

Enjoy an urban park experience at old timers Dulwich Park, Wandsworth Park and Wimbledon Park. Other London locations include Brompton Cemetery, Chiswick House, Marble Hill, Victoria Tower Gardens and Royal Hospital Chelsea.

London’s Westminster Abbey will once again welcome guests to experience the open air cinema in its 800 year old setting...

If you fancy venturing further afield, the likes of Ascot Racecourse, Blenheim Palace, Cardiff Castle and Hyde Hall (and more!) will all be welcoming film lovers through their doors (or, rather outside spaces) to catch classics and modern Hollywood favourites outside.

The Luna Cinema is only at locations for a select few days, so book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

Films! What will be screening?

Expect recent blockbusters including Bohemian Rhapsody, Joker and The Greatest Showman to be making their way onto the big screen once more, as well as all-time classics like Casablanca and Some Like It Hot.

Popular perennials including Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, and Harry Potter will feature on the list too. Not forgetting dinosaurs spearheading towards you in Jurassic Park.

Screenings vary depending on location, keep up to date here.

And will there be snacks?

Of course! The cinema experience is all about gorging on your favourite snacks so The Luna Cinema has plenty of tasty treats to fuel you through your screening.

The Luna Bar with Moretti will be on hand at all screenings, serving up a fantastic selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, including the Italian beer itself. Hot food will also be available and can be ordered via the ‘click and collect’ service to help avoid time spent queuing. Guests are also welcome to bring their own hampers and dig into handmade picnics, though bringing alcohol to the events is restricted.

Ice cream will be available too, courtesy of Häagen-Dazs, providing the perfect accompaniment to your favourite movie, as well as helping you cool off in the heat.

When is it running?

The cinema season runs 29th June to 3rd October.
