Peaky Blinders is set to finally return in movie form in the near future- but in the meantime, its creator Steven Knight has a new historical drama coming to Netflix. Set in Dublin during the 1860s, House of Guinness focuses on the inheritors of the now world-famous beer brand, and how they laid the foundations of what Guinness would become today. Louis Partridge (Disclaimer), James Norton (Playing Nice), Emily Fairn (Black Mirror) and Anthony Boyle (Say Nothing) star, and it’s out this week. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is House of Guinness about?

The beloved pint of Guinness has recently had a surge of popularity, meaning a drama about its early days is coming at a good time. Social media trends and Gen Z wanting to split the G even led Guinness supplies to run low last year, and Netflix is capitalising on the resurgence with House of Guinness, a new eight-part miniseries written by Knight. It takes us back to Dublin in the mid-19th century, and follows the Guinness family who gave their name to the drink. Brewer Arthur Guinness had first invented it in 1759, with his descendant Benjamin having inherited the brand and made it a success. But after Benjamin dies, Guinness is passed to his four adult children.

The inheritors include Edward (played by Partridge), Arthur (Boyle), Anne (Fairn) and Ben (O’Shea), who now have control of the biggest brewery not just in Ireland but the world. As Steven Knight puts it in his summary of the show: “They’re young and are given the task of taking on this incredibly successful brand…the first priority is: Don’t screw it up. And the second priority is to make Guinness even bigger.” But of course, such an inheritance comes with a lot of power, and what the Guinness clan decide to do with it is key to the show. There’s also a focus on other residents of Dublin, all of whom work and interact with Guinness in different ways.

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

House of Guinness also stars Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones), David Wilmer (Bodkin) and Michael McElhatton (The Long Shadow). It’s premiering this week, on 25th September.
