These Are The Jean Styles To Wear In 2024

Can I wear skinnies? What are barrel jeans? How baggy is too baggy? All relevant questions in a season that seems inundated with so many denim trends. So we’ve made things simple and picked out the key fashion jeans that are guaranteed to be in every stylish wardrobe before the year is out…
Throwing on your favourite jeans has always been a no-brainer—easy, comfortable, and no–effort dressing. Today, however, the options are great and varied… so actually finding those favourite jeans is no mean feat. The latest denim jeans to hit stores are a delicious mix of fits, colours, and cuts, with all the big labels offering up styles for every day of the week.
Agolde’s Balloon leg jeans have become instantly iconic, while we’re still obsessed with the old-faithful, Levi’s 501® (which incidentally celebrates its 150th anniversary this year). Meanwhile, LA-based premium denim brand Mother has become the go-to for the style-set, A-listers and royalty. Created by Tim Kaeding and Lela Becker – formerly of 7 For All Mankind, and Citizens of Humanity, the collection evokes teenage rebellion, unconditional love and ‘70s California. SS24 sees a mash-up of vintage-inspired looks and hints of Western styling. Check out the The Bookie Heel high-rise wide-leg jeans or The Thrasher Flood straight cut.
Blue and black jeans remain a constant, however there’s a definite lean towards shades of grey and white, especially as we creep closer to summer. Cuffed styles are also big, both literally and in trend and there’s an obvious penchant for embellishment. But, if we’re starting with the basics, let’s choose the fit first…
The Straight Leg
For those once devoted to skinny jeans, the transition to the slightly looser straight cut was an obvious move. Favoured by minimalists, this look is effortless and classic. With a nod to the ‘90s, these denims offer a retro nod while looking contemporary, not to mention achingly cool. Their return to the sartorial spotlight was cemented when they appeared on the Bottega Venetta and Tove runways and on the legs of numerous celebs, from Kaia Gerber to Alexa Chung.
The Baggier, The Better
Oh yes, they had me at baggy. Loose, oversized and seriously roomy; some may even say man-repellent fodder… I do not care. These are the jeans of choice for both the style-savvy and teenagers. They offer an unparalleled nonchalance, that apparently we’re all here for. Arket’s Cloud low loose jeans have sold out multiple times, proving so popular the brand has now introduced even more colour options. Not only do they look great with trainers, but come summer, we’re talking perfect laid-back boho vibes with a simple pair of flip-flops.
The Barrel Jeans
Also known as the ‘horeshoe’, this marmite style has recently exploded in popularity. Google searches have gone through the roof and our fave influencers are all over these controversial denims. Showcasing a more sculptural shape, these definitely feel very fashion-forward without forgoing comfort. French fashion house Alaïa is, in part, to thank for the recent fashion love affair, but unsurprisingly Agolde, Free People, Paige and Everlane were quick to push their own versions. And yes, I’ve put my order in for the We The Free Good Luck Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans. Rude not to, right?
The Wide Leg
With a more high-rise waistband, these ‘70s-inspired jeans look good on so many body shapes. They’re also ideal if you want a sleeker take on the baggy jean, especially when worn with the SS24 platform heels. Look to Reformation, Madewell and Toteme for limitless style inspo. And, of course, add The Bookie Heel high-rise wide-leg jeans to your wish list immediately. Pair with a simple tee and a neck tie or a bohemian blouse for the ultimate spring combo.
…and yes, skinnies are officially back.
Yep, it’s true. We can finally end the debate. While some of us never quite ditched the favoured fit, I can share that, following fashion month, the skinny jean is ready for its comeback. Seen on the autumn/winter ’24 catwalks at Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga, it won’t be long before those longing for a pert butt will be squeezing back into the figure-hugging bottoms. Also spotted in said jeans, was actress and model, Camille Rowe on the Chanel front row. Plus, if that’s not proof enough, Topshop’s Jamie jeans are as iconic as ever.
