8 of London’s Best Gourmet Sandwiches

30th July 2015

The highlight of every working person’s day is surely lunchtime. Don’t get us wrong, we love our job, but we definitely love food more. While supermarket meal deals are all well and good, sometimes you want something a bit more adventurous and upmarket than a cheese and pickle sandwich. London is full of great restaurants, cafes and street vendors, with plenty of gourmet sandwiches on offer, that are sure to satisfy your lunchtime cravings…check out our list of the best of the bunch below!

Bacon Naan Roll at Dishoom

Meaty goodness stretching the definition of a sandwich (oh well it still tastes good)

This is a combination that really shouldn’t work. It’s pretty much like mixing your Indian takeaway with your morning fry up and that doesn’t sound like it would taste very good. However, using fresh-from-the-oven naan and chilli jam, this porky treat defies expectations and is super tasty. Just know that once you’ve tried it, your Mum’s bacon sandwiches are going to taste pretty basic.

Philly Cheesesteak at The Liberty Cheesesteak Company

Good old-fashioned American grease

Not for the faint hearted, The Liberty Cheesesteak Company claim to be the only vendors offering an authentic and calorie-filled Philly cheesesteak. That consists of ribeye steak, Cheez Whiz, and onions. This gooey goodness is a dream to eat, but napkins are definitely required.

Chargrilled Cauliflower Wrap at Mike & Ollie

Vegetable goodness…a hell of a lot of it

Chefs Mike and Ollie are all about the local and the natural and their chargrilled cauliflower wrap definitely hits the spot. Packed with crispy garlic and cumin, hummus, red cabbage, rosehip molasses, homemade yoghurt, Turkish chilli, toasted seeds, coriander and rocket (pause for breath), you are definitely getting your fill of greens for the day! Meaning it’s totally ok to eat that leftover doughnut in the office kitchen.

Smoked Eel Sandwich at Quo Vadis

The Rolls Royce of sarnies

Definitely a cut above your homemade wrap, this gourmet sandwich is both sophisticated and tasteful (as in, it’s full of flavour!) Combining rich smoked eel with poky horseradish cream and tangy pickled onions on charred sourdough, eating this will give you a lunchtime you’re not likely to forget.

Toasted Cheese Sandwich at Kappacasein

A toastie cheesier than S Club 7

Kappacasein are the original London providers of grilled cheese and don’t show any signs of waning. A combination of Comté, Montgomery’s cheddar and Ogleshield cheese melted between two slices of Polaine sourdough. There’s garlic, leeks, and red and white onions too. Truly a cheese lover’s dream.

Bao Bun at Bao London

Brilliant bao (a soft steamed bun)

Beautiful fluffy bao that can be stuffed with a range of fillings, including pork belly, chicken oysters, or miso-glazed mushrooms and finished with toppings, such as preserved vegetables, coriander and shaved peanut brittle. (Image: Carol Sachs)

Made to Measure Sandwiches at Street Kitchen

Mega-sandwiches cut to size

While the old saying goes that good things come in small packages, this is certainly not the case at Street Kitchen. These sandwiches are made to be 24 inches long and types include focaccia, pitta, challah, rye and brioche. Of course you’re not expected to eat the whole thing, that would be unreasonable. Instead, the sandwiches are cut to length depending on how hungry you are, perfect for when one sandwich isn’t quite enough but two is too much.

Lobster Roll at Burger & Lobster

Think of it as a gourmet fish finger sandwich

This dish is a soft brioche roll filled with lobster mayonnaise, chunks of tender lobster, zingy chive and a lovely creamy, but light mayo, making for an almost unbeatable bite. The sandwich comes with salad and chips on the side and is a sophisticated reinvention of the humble sarnie. It may be simple in form, but it is done exceptionally well.

Crab Roll at Newman Street Tavern

homemade happiness

‘Da Tavern’ as we like to call it, offers rolls-to-go from the new Goodge Street window. The highlight is the homemade hand-picked Devon crab roll, which is freshly prepared each morning and handmade with daily-delivered British crab and served in freshly baked sourdough-base rolls.
