Despite the weather not always having our best interest in mind, Londoners are obsessed with an outdoor event. From foodie festivals to alfresco dining, we’re a city that can’t get enough. Which is just as well because there’s a giant outdoor theatre and cinema that’s arriving in the capital this month…
This summer sees the return of Summer Showtime, London’s only open-air theatre and cinema experience. Returning to Battersea Power Station, the experience will see a mega line-up of film screenings and theatrical performances take over the Coaling Jetty on the Thames.
Summer Showtime, running between 17th July and 30th August, will once more be the backdrop of all of your favourite silver screen classics courtesy of The Cinema in the Arches, as well as live performances from The Turbine Theatre.
So, what’s going to be shown?
Film lovers can expect to fall back in love with all of the Hollywood favourites, including The Dark Knight, which had scenes that were filmed in the Power Station itself – pretty cool.
The screenings will be courtesy of Cinema in The Arches, formerly Archlight Cinema, known for being one of the best independent cinemas in the city.
Other film screenings include Dunkirk, Dirty Dancing, La La Land, Back To The Future, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mamma Mia and Shaun of the Dead. There’ll also be a few children friendly screenings too, from Disney’s Moana and Frozen to Taika Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
What about the theatre performances?
With theatres largely closed for the last 18 months, theatre enthusiasts can finally get their fix with The Turbine Theatre’s alfresco performances on the Coaling Jetty. Expect a whole lot of Shakespeare, musical numbers and comedy thrown in for good measure.
See some of the brightest performances of your favourite productions come to life outside, including performances of Jane Eyre, Romeo & Juliet and The Best of Frankie Valli. As well as family-friendly productions of Wind in the Willows, Beauty and the Beast and Three Little Pigs.
Last year saw performances sell out quickly so make sure you get your bookings in quick to avoid disappointment and to make this one summer memory to remember.

How about snacks?
No cinema or theatre trip is complete without a bucket worth of snacks in tow, so guests can tuck into tasty meals, treats and drinks to keep them going through the performances.
Brunch and doggy-friendly favourite, Megan’s will be on hand to offer hot toasties, picnic boxes, salads and brownies, all of which can be washed down with Pimm’s, Aperol Spritz and Meantime pale ale. Vagabond Wines will also be offering a selection of cheese and charcuterie boards, nibbles and Champagne.
For those looking for a pre or post show meal, Battersea Power Station is home to loads of great independent restaurants, you’ll find something for everyone.
Whether you’re after a rom-com, action or just some light hearted comedy theatre, Summer Showtime holds all of the answers.
