The Handbook
The Handbook

Once the haunt of King Edward VII and his mistress, Lillie Langtry, The Clifton in St John’s Wood is reopening next week after its unexpected closure in 2013. We can’t report that there’ll be any royals necessarily, but we can tell you that it sounds like it’s going to be cracking.

Back in 2007, brothers Ben and Ed Robson started running the first pub they ever drank in, The Horseshoe in Hampstead, nonchalant, this was followed by their successful Prosecco and schnitzel bar, Boopshi’s in Fitzrovia and now, they are going to be giving The Clifton a new lease of life.

They’ve enlisted the help of New Zealander Head Chef, Karl Calvert (Providores, Beef & Brew and Caravan) to create a menu of globally-inspired dishes that will make use of often overlooked cuts of meat such as ox heart, mutton and pork neck, as well as favouring the long, lazy weekend brunch over the Sunday roast. Divided into two sections, Drinking House (aka bar snacks) and Eating House (full all-day menu), the menu features the likes of haggis sausage rolls with Famous Grouse ketchup; mutton rendang croquettes with banana raita, lime pickle and curry leaves; roast cod with arrocina beans, fennel, sea vegetables, saffron and aioli, and for brunch, sweet corn jalapeno fritters with chipotle onion jam, avocado and rocket. You can also stop by on the way to work, not for a pint, but for a coffee and pastry. Talking of pints, they plan to brew their own Clifton beer. Until that happens there’ll also be local and craft beers on tap and a strong wine list which Ben and Ed have created with Raul Diaz (wine sommelier and expert of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch).

Cosy Chesterfields, slouchy armchairs, wood panelling and original elements such as fireplaces will make up the look which is being designed by Red Deer (Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings and No. 197 Chiswick Fire Station). The menu might be modern, but the atmosphere and feel is going to be that of a traditional social eating house and pub.

It’s had a bit of a hiatus, some time off, if you will, but hopefully now The Clifton is back for good.
