Buttermilk: The Pale Yellow Fashion Trend That Feels SO SS24

Winter saw us cocooning ourselves in pillar box red and warm chocolate brown, but I’m ready for something fresh for spring. Enter, buttermilk, the shade currently taking Instagram stars’ squares by storm and that was seen on the SS24 runways at the likes of Loewe, Tove, Celine and Proenza Schouler. From occasionwear to weekend style, here’s how to make pale yellow work in your wardrobe…
First of all, the thing I love most about this shade – that sits somewhere between champagne and lemon meringue – is that it looks expensive. Dresses are an obvious choice for buttermilk and whilst a pretty white frock is my go-to as soon as the summer months start to show, worked in this colourway, feels more expensive and more polished. That’s in part because this luxurious shade plays to many different fabrics. It feels almost liquid-like in a silk slip dress; gives ‘Tomato Girl Summer’ vibes to wafty linen; and feels more structured, more substantial worked into cotton sundresses.
Case in point, Tove’s Lauryn dress, which thanks to the squares of Instagram and just about every fashion influencer worth their salt styling it up, has gained a slight cult status. Seen here on lawyer/influencer Thandi, is it not just the most perfect holiday dress you’ve ever seen? Wear with everything from a beach bag and bare feet to strappy sandals and statement earrings in the evening. And, up your cost-per-wear by layer a white tee underneath for a British-appropriate brunch look.

If you’re not in the market for strapless sundresses (I am somewhat getting ahead of myself, it’s only April) there are plenty of other ways to work the buttermilk trend. Mango’s oversized bomber is a spring-worthy alternative to the usual black/grey/navy script, whilst Free People’s Osaka jeans are a boho way to work denim this summer.
For fans of a head-to-toe colour block look, buttermilk works particularly well and will bring a quiet luxury to your wardrobe. Choose from Topshop’s slouchy trousers suit which has ‘spring wedding guest’ written all over it; H&M’s fashion editor-feel waistcoat, maxi skirt and oversized blazer trio; or Sézane’s 1970s-inspired three-piece suit. Keep styling simple with gold hoops and pared-back accessories.
