Just finished Netflix’s much-raved about Baby Reindeer, and looking for a new thriller to get stuck into? Red Eye, which is available on ITVX, can help fill that gap.

Taking place at 30,000 feet, the thriller sees Dr Matthew Nolan (Fool Me Once star Richard Armitage) is flown to China for crimes that he doesn’t believe he’s committed. In shades of last year’s Apple TV+ hit Hijack, the lengthy redeye flight from London to Beijing becomes a race against time as mysterious deaths start occurring, throwing the officer accompanying Matthew, DC Hana Li (Jing Lusi) into crisis mode.

What is Red Eye about?

ITVX’s new thriller sees us following Armitage’s character Dr Matthew Nolan, a talented and intelligent medical practitioner after he attends a high profile medical conference in China’s capital city. Shortly after departing however, his life is upended by two events in quick succession: he’s involved in a car crash that takes him perilously close to death, and, surviving that, is suddenly arrested once he arrives at Heathrow Airport.

He has no idea why he’s been detained, but the police reveal he’s believed to have murdered a woman in the car simultaneously, after her body is recovered from the wreckage. Matthew is left bewildered: he’s sure no one was in the car with him at the time of the crash, and that the authorities are seriously mistaken. He could be suffering delusions and memory loss from the crash, but before he has the chance to protest he’s put on a plane back to China to face his charges.

Who else stars?

Our other central character is the police officer assigned to accompany him on the flight back, DC Hana Li. She’s not in the mood for any games or protests from him and keeps a sharp eye on Matthew, barely concealing her resentment at the task. The long flight, however, goes from bad to worse when someone suddenly dies aboard the flight, and Hana suspects foul play. Next thing she knows, MI5 is getting involved to question her about the onboard goings on, with the head of the service, Madeline Delaney (Lesley Sharp) leading proceedings. A rapidly growing and escalating conspiracy is tangling them all, as well as Jess Li (Jemma Moore), a scrappy journalist who doesn’t get on with her police officer half-sister, Hana.

When will it be released?

The six part series also stars Dan Li, Cash Holland and Johnathan Aris, and is available to stream right now on ITVX.
