Wolf Pack

Fans of the supernatural have got shows like The Midnight Club and Cabinet of Curiosities to binge right now, but in the late 90s and early 00s Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the few TV shows in the genre, becoming cult classics and a pop culture phenomenon, and making Sarah Michelle Gellar an international household name. While a revived sequel series is unlikely to ever materialise, the queen of supernatural TV is making a comeback to the genre as one of the lead roles in Paramount+’s Wolf Pack out today.

Created and developed by Jeff Davis, who also created Teen Wolf (though this isn’t a spin-off), and executive produced by Gellar, the show sees the lives of two teenagers turned upside down when a wildfire awakens a supernatural creature, which terrorises their town. The teens are wounded in the attack and ensuing chaos and find themselves inexplicably drawn not only to each other but also to two others, Harlan and Luna, who were adopted several years earlier by a park ranger following a similarly mysterious fire. “As the full moon rises, all four teens come together to unravel the secret that connects them- the bite and blood of a werewolf”, reads the official synopsis.

Gellar’s character, meanwhile, has been revealed by the actress on Instagram: Kristin Ramsey is an arsonist investigator, dispatched to find the cause of the fire and who may have been responsible. She’s a highly regarded expert in her field and is no stranger to personal loss. Her co-star Bella Shepard commented Gellar’s character is a “total badass”- so you can expect a similarly tough character to Buffy.

Gellar spoke about coming back to the supernatural genre and to a character like Buffy, saying “I’ve been pitched once, twice, 2000 of these shows. Honestly, at first, I had no intention of saying yes… ….when I read the script, it was the first time where my interest was so piqued”. She likened the show to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in how it has metaphorical aspects and themes, such as dealing with anxiety, depression and isolation in children and young adults. Buffy (and Teen Wolf) devotees won’t have to wait as the show debuts today!
