7 Things To Stream This Easter & Beyond

5th April 2023 | By Rufus Punt

April is here, and with it the easter holidays, longer evenings and plenty of new TV to get addicted to. This month is a particularly good one for brand-new shows, with Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ serving up some of their most anticipated dramas in the coming weeks. There are exciting thrillers, dark comedies and a couple of remakes of 80s classics, so read on for more:

Barry Season 4

Barry is one of TV’s most underrated shows in recent years, but the HBO series about a depressed hitman (Bill Hader) has built up a steady stream of fans and critical claim. It might not have the same high concept premises as The Last of Us and House of Dragon, but Hader’s Barry searching for whether he can become a better person and move away from his life as an assassin packs an emotional punch, while being darkly funny. We’ll try not to spoil too much from the previous seasons if you’ve not seen them, but the final few episodes will see things closing in for Barry, as he questions who his friends are (if he has any), and will explore the dramatic character developments of Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and acting coach Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler).

Beef

Another dark comedy (but perhaps more emphasis on the comedy), Beef is a new series from Netflix that features Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Minari) and Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe) as its leads. It focuses on two very different people, the entrepreneurial Amy (Wong) and the down on his luck contractor Danny whose lives cross in a road rage incident- and neither is able to forgive or forget the other. The mutual rage slowly begins to consume them, and both begin to scheme and go out of their way to exact revenge on each other in increasingly outlandish ways. Beef also stars Young Mazino, Patti Yasutake, Maria Bellow and Ashley Parke, and is produced for Netflix by A24.

Dead Ringers

A remake of the 80s Cronenberg body horror classic, Dead Ringers is on its way to Amazon Prime Video, and stars Rachel Weisz as two identical twins who are expert gynecologists (previously played by Jeremy Irons). The two twins may be identical but they have differing personalities and are bound by both their shared expertise and their interest in pushing the medical envelope. Both dislike and want to challenge the misogyny and other problems that women’s health care faces, and will resort to unethical and illegal practices to bring about the change they feel is desperately needed. The six-part series also includes Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Jennifer Ehle and Jeremy Shamos amongst its cast members.

Fatal Attraction

Yep, it’s another 80s classic getting the TV remake treatment: the 1987 erotic thriller Fatal Attraction, that helped cement the careers of Michael Douglas and Glenn Close, is being reimagined for Paramount+ this month. This time, the leads of Alex Forrest and Dan Gallagher will be played by Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson. The two characters begin a secret and passionate affair, but things begin to get out of hand when Alex refuses to let Dan, who’s married, to put an end to it. The story is set to move the viewpoint more to Alex’s perspective than the original, and tell in more detail her side of the story. It’ll also feature Amanda Peet, Toby Huss, Reno Wilson, Jessica Harper and Wanda De Jesus.

Citadel

One of the biggest projects in Amazon Prime’s history, Citadel challenges even The Rings of Power in cost and scope. This initial six episode series starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas focuses on two spies attempting to piece together their past after losing their memories, as well as investigating the destruction of their international spy agency, The Citadel. Also starring Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville and Osy Ikhile, the first season alone will be big enough- but Amazon wants this show to kickstart a shared universe, with spin offs around the globe helping to form a multi-layered world that can be explored as much as a viewer wants. The spin-offs haven’t been fully detailed yet, but will so far be set in Italy, Spain, India and Mexico.

The Diplomat

More geo-political action can be found this month on Netflix in the form of its new series The Diplomat, which features some impressive talent: Keri Russell, who starred in the acclaimed espionage series The Americans, leads the show as a diplomat who becomes the US ambassador to the UK. This major role brings with it global crises and disputes that she soon finds herself in the centre of, with potentially dangerous results if she and her team get it wrong. Rufus Sewell plays her on screen husband, and Debora Cahn, a writer and executive producer on the also geopolitical Homeland is the series showrunner.

Tiny Beautiful Things

Kathyrn Hahn, who’s been having a renaissance in the past few years with scene stealing roles in Wandavision and Glass Onion, leads this series on Disney+ based on the book of the same name by Cheryl Strayed. Clare is a writer who seems to be floundering in her career- with a litany of problems like her difficult marriage to her husband, Danny and her daughter Rae is becoming more and more distant from her. Her career is also not going anywhere, and feels close to giving it all up. She’s the last person she’d imagine giving out advice to others on how to handle their lives. But that’s exactly what she ends up doing, after realising she’s got nothing to lose and taking a job as the “Dear Sugar” advice columnist. Sarah Pidgeon, Quentin Plair, Tanzyn Crawford and Owen Painter also star.
