Remember those few weeks when Squid Game ruled the world? The Korean survival drama sensation shook up the pop culture landscape and remains Netflix’s most streamed show, above the likes of Wednesday and Bridgerton. It’s no shock then that after confirming the series will return for a second season, Netflix also announced plans for a reality TV game show version, entitled Squid Game: The Challenge.

It’s been in the works for a while, with casting calls and hints of what’s to come, but we’ve finally got a teaser trailer and official details of the competition that sees contestants compete for a whopping $4.56 million. Out this Wednesday 22nd November, here’s what we know…

What happens in Squid Game: The Challenge?

How do you pull off Squid Game in real life? When the show came out, there were news stories seemingly every day of school kids getting into trouble for doing their own version of the shows’ deadly trials in playgrounds or of London pop-ups of Squid Game-esque competitions to cash in on the monster hit series.

But Netflix’s new show is the real deal: a 10-episode series in which 456 hopeful players (Squid Gamers?) compete to outlast the rest to win $4.56 million. That’s $100,000 for every player beaten, plus the winner, and is the highest cash prize offered in history. Being made by Netflix, the show will feature all the proper Squid Game costumes and hallmarks, with some twists on things to keep it fresh for fans of the show.

Who appears?

We don’t know many details yet of who actually appears in the show as contestants, though it’s unlikely we’re going to get to know any of them very intimately until later episodes when the crowd has thinned out a bit.

Netflix opened casting applications back in the summer of 2022, wanting contestants from all of the world, as long as they could speak English. There’s also no word on any presenters or if any actors from the show appear in the series.

The teaser trailer does give some glimpses of contestants, reacting in shock to the crazy challenges before them, but there’s little else to go on. The same teaser also shows that the iconic Squid Game guards, giant robotic doll and the pig ornament stuffed with cash will be parts of the show, so it’ll certainly feel like the real series.

When will it be released?

Squid Game: The Challenge arrives on the streamer this Wednesday 22nd November.
