The term “ugly” when referring to something you want to reside in your home might not have queues wrapping around the corner, but there is something seriously charming about the weird and wonderful shapes we’re seeing in the lighting world recently. Say hello to the ugly table lamp trend. Trust us, you might just love it.

Ok, the term “ugly” might be a little unfair. Let’s go with “unusual” or “out of the ordinary” when we’re talking about this unlikely interiors trend, but there’s no denying kooky table lamps are everywhere right now. Think of them as a talking point, a piece of art in their own right rather than just functional, or something your mother-in-law might take a double glance and a condemning look at.

The ugly light is here to say, and quite honestly, we kind of love it. There are some incredibly talented ceramicists bridging the gap between lighting and artwork, from Palefire’s architectural shapes and retro colour palettes to Martu’s nothing-short-of-crazy octopus-inspired pieces. Plus, our favourite, Hannah Simpson, whose offbeat arch designs, fuzzy lampshades and sloping proportions will light up a corner of a room with pure joy.

As per, the high street is quick on the coattails of the trend, with Zara’s ceramic light in faded rainbow stripes and H&M’s pleated paper design in rich rust – it’s giving student digs but somehow works.

We’re also seeing styles made from paper maché, which take on a surrealist, almost cartoon-like feel, from Findere’s cute Momigami paper lamp to Abigail Ahern’s Laval Paper Mache style, which somehow manages to be both contemporary and chic and a little bit bonkers.

Martu’s nothing-short-of-crazy octopus-inspired pieces will add a pop of whimsical joy to a quiet reading spot, console table or curated bookshelf.
