The Consultant Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is looking to get 2023 off to a strong start, with the release of high-anticipated shows Daisy Jones and the Six and J-Lo’s Hollywood return with the romcom Shotgun Wedding. But lurking between these two releases is an intriguing new comedy-thriller series, The Consultant, arriving on Amazon on 24th February.

Starring Christoph Waltz, Nat Wolff, and Brittany O’Grady, the show is based on a novel of the same name by author Bentley Little. It’s set at a tech company that’s having a tough time after a failed merger and hires a business consultant. Things go awry when he seems to start running over the entire company.

What we know about The Consultant on Amazon Prime

The titular consultant, Regus Patoff is played by Waltz, best known for his villainous roles in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and the last two Bond films- and he seems to be bringing that same sinister energy to the Amazon series. CompWare, the gaming app firm he’s asked to help out, is facing troubled times following a big merger falling through and is forced to find a new way of doing things. A new way of doing things is certainly what Patoff is bringing to the table, with the teaser trailer showing a glimpse of the employees being put through rigid and strange new rules. “We work for a sociopath” exclaims one character, as Patoff is seen meticulously overhauling the company into a new regime. The accusations of uncaring tyranny don’t seem to bother the consultant though: “if you see me as a monster, so be it”, Patoff is heard saying menacingly.

The minute-long teaser doesn’t give away much in terms of what the eight-episode series has in store for us, but it looks like it’ll be something of a slow burn, with increasingly rigid rules being imposed on the employees that begin to cross a line.

There are also glimpses of a masked figure, a body being put in the back of a van and an employee on the floor scrambling away, so it seems fair to say things will get pretty intense. What’s also interesting is that the trailer doesn’t seem to particularly feature much comedy, with The Consultant likely having similar dark, off-beat humour to films like Netflix’s Don’t Look Up and last year’s The Menu.

Waltz won two Best Supporting actor Oscars for Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, while O’Grady starred in HBO’s The White Lotus. Wolff meanwhile featured in the Tiger King drama Joe Vs Carole, and Aimee Carrero appeared in the aforementioned The Menu.

The Consultant drops on Amazon Prime on 24th February.
