From investment pieces that will see you through multiple pregnancies to trend-led high street picks and clever designs that you will use well beyond the third trimester, scroll on for 40 maternity wear looks you’ll actually want to wear.

Maternity clothes have come a long way. Gone are the days that expectant mothers had few options – tented smocks, wrap dresses or bows that sit quaintly above your growing bump, and of course the cliché dungarees  – although we’re still pretty into those. Now the market has plenty of options that allow mums-to-be to feel and look like themselves for the next nine months.

The impossibly chic Rosie Huntington-Whiteley lived in the super comfy 'Bumpsuit' when she was pregnant, layering it over non-maternity pieces from a camel cape coat to slouchy YSL boots.

Searches in maternity wear have rocketed in the last few months, no doubt thanks to the Rihanna effect. While we are obsessed with the superstar’s gestational catwalk and gorgeously growing bump, her looks are unlikely to cut it on the Central Line, even with a ‘baby on board’ badge. But there’s definitely somewhere you can meet in the middle, pieces that will make you feel stylish but also comfortable and work with your growing shape right up until due date and beyond.

For investment pieces – great if you’re planning another pregnancy further down the line or want to pass pieces onto friends – we love Hatch. The American brand has plenty of dresses we’d happily wear outside of pregnancy, but reworked to support a changing body. Think silky fluid slips, sweet ruffle necklines and intricate broderie anglaise.

Clever British brand, Beyond Nine, is all about creating pieces that will work before, during and after pregnancy, with breezy relaxed shapes and comfortable fabrics. We love the linen Laura playsuit paired with Breton stripes and espadrilles for a Riviera vibe.

And on the high street, you can’t go wrong with H&M who do the best maternity jeans at an affordable price point; River Island for cool trend-led pieces; and ASOS for occasionwear dressing.

For investment pieces, we love modern maternity brand Hatch - think silky fluid slips, sweet ruffle necklines and intricate broderie anglaise.
