Anne Hathaway is having a big year, from starring in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey this month to her return earlier this year as Andy in The Devil Wears Prada 2. One of her more mysterious upcoming roles, however, is in Verity, a psychological thriller based on the novel by Colleen Hoover.

Hathaway stars alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, telling the story of a writer (Johnson) who is asked to help a bestselling author, Verity (Hathaway), complete her book series after a mysterious accident. When she accepts, she begins to fret about Verity’s mental state- and if she can be fully trusted. Here’s everything we know so far:

What is Verity about?

Verity follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, played by Dakota Johnson, whose career receives an unexpected lifeline when she is offered the chance to complete a hugely successful book series. The novels are the work of bestselling author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), who has been left unable to write following a mysterious accident that seemingly no one knows anything about. Verity’s husband, Jeremy (played by Josh Hartnett), invites Lowen to stay at the family’s remote estate while she looks over Verity’s notes and unfinished manuscripts, as she steadily works to finally complete the series.

At first, it’s the job of a lifetime and the arrangement seems straightforward, and Lowen is sure that things will turn around for her. But as she settles into the house, she discovers an unpublished autobiographical manuscript hidden among Verity’s papers- which, given Verity’s success, feels like an amazing find. What she reads, however, is deeply disturbing, containing shocking confessions that raise terrifying questions about the truth of Verity’s past and the tragic events that have affected the Crawford family.

The more Lowen uncovers, the more uncertain she becomes about what is real, and who she can trust. Is the manuscript a faithful account of the bestselling author’s life, a work of exaggerated fiction, or part of a far more elaborate- and frightening- manipulation? While she ponders over the mystery and (apparent) revelations of the manuscript, Lowen gets closer and closer to Jeremy, potentially setting up a dangerous love triangle between the pair and Verity herself.

The latest adaptation of Hoover’s books following It Ends With Us, Forgetting You and Reminders of Him, Verity leans into the conventions of those classic erotic psychological thrillers that had their onscreen heyday in the 80s and 90s.

Is there a trailer, and who else stars?

The first teaser trailer recently debuted from Amazon, giving us a first look at the film’s eerie atmosphere and the kind of psychological games between Lowen and Verity. Alongside Hathaway, Johnson and Hartnett, the cast includes Ismael Cruz Córdova and Brady Wagner in supporting roles.

When does it release?

Mark your calendars because Verity is set to arrive in UK cinemas on 2 October 2026, and you can watch the official trailer below.
