We Tried TikTok’s Viral Matcha Latte Recipe – Here’s Our Review
If summer has you reaching for a refreshing iced beverage come 3pm, welcome to the club. And few drinks are more craved than the iced latte – specifically, the matcha variety. The 2024 equivalent of Gen Z catnip, this editor has found herself obsessed with the drink du jour. So rather than going down to my local every afternoon, like someone who has zero self-control, I took to the land of the ‘youths’ (AKA TikTok) and found that many like-minded folks had done the same.
Their aim? To recreate a certain white chocolate flavour iced matcha latte at home, for a fraction of the price and time taken to walk to said shop and order. Here’s how trying the viral recipe went…
White Chocolate Ice Matcha Latte Recipe
cook time: 2 minutes
serves: 1
Ingredients
1 tablespoon Monin White Chocolate Sauce*
1/3 teaspoon pure matcha powder
Hot water (enough to dissolve chocolate sauce and the matcha)
Milk of your choice (I used oat milk)
Ice cubes
* This is one of the most debated ingredients, with some citing that they’ve found syrup to be the answer, whereas others swear by the sauce iteration. When I was in Blank Street, I nabbed a picture of the one behind the counter and it was, in my case, a sauce (specifically, the Hollander White Chocolate Cafe Sauce, which you can’t buy here) so I’ve taken inspo from TikTok creator @shaejuliuss who recommends the Monin sauce as a strong alternative.
Method
1. Using either a traditional chasen or handheld frother, combine the matcha powder with hot water until you can see a deep green colour and bubbles on top.
2. In your serving glass, dissolve a tablespoon of the white chocolate sauce with a small amount of hot water before adding ice and the milk of your choice.
3. Lastly, pour over the matcha and use a straw or spoon to thoroughly stir for a uniform jade colour.
Verdict
While ordering a sauce off Amazon involved more commitment than I’m usually willing to offer viral recipes, I have to admit, this was definitely worth it. I’m now making my matcha at home most afternoons, instead of going to the cafe, and I’m not sure I’d be able to correctly distinguish them in a blind taste test.
