When the bank balance needs a rest, but it’s cold outside, and you need a little something to perk you up… It’s ok to treat yourself to some January fashion if it’s an essential, right?

Well, that’s how I’m rolling with it. In a month that feels like it never ends, I’m leaning into hardworking style investment pieces. So, when I say ‘no spend January’, I plan to keep things low-key, not give in to the latest trend and basically avoid expensive frivolity. Instead, I am only going to purchase five items that will keep on giving beyond this month.

1. A white shirt

Perfect for layering under classic knitwear, a must if you want a fast track to sophistication, and the epitome of easy transitional styling. The dream is the Boyfriend shirt from WNU, but Zara’s budget-friendly options are also ever so chic.

2. A work tote

New year, new bag – I mean, it marks a beginning, a fresh start. A touch like a new schoolbag to embrace those back-to-work vibes. I could be seduced by a Demellier, but again, our brilliant high street brands do have a spectacular offering for chic work handbags.

3. Luxe lounge pants

If we’re indulging in cosy nights in, avoiding hefty restaurant bills, it seems only fair we get to laze around in luxurious knitted joggers. Alo’s cable knit pants look insanely comfortable. That said, both H&M and Lounge have the cutest matching sets, too.

4. Timeless loafers

Much like purchasing a new tote, slipping into shiny shoes is a quick way to refocus. Smart, stylish, and here to stay, womens loafers are best worn right now with a colourful sock, but they will work hard for you right into spring. Plus, the John Lewis ones are giving major Saint Laurent feels.

5. A turtleneck

Practical yet trending, we’re seeing content creators galore layering up in skinny-rib turtlenecks. Look for ones in cashmere or merino wool for extra warmth, and I promise you, this will be money well spent. Uniqlo’s HeatTech cashmere blend turtleneck has been the fave, so don’t hang about as they get snapped up quickly.
