Wuthering Heights, Starring Margot Robbie & Jacob Elordi, Arrives This Week

The award-winning director behind Saltburn and Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell, is directing a new adaptation of the classic novel Wuthering Heights for the big screen. Starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. With so much hype surrounding its release this week, it’s safe to say the internet is obsessed.
What is Wuthering Heights about?
Saltburn was a film steeped in satire about the eccentricities of the rich upper classes of England, so it feels like it makes sense for Fennell to jump from there to a long-time classic of English literature. Emily Brontë’s most famous novel, Wuthering Heights, along with often being studied at schools and inspiring Kate Bush’s first hit single, has elements of gothic fiction that were present in Fennell’s most recent directing work. If you’re unfamiliar with the book, the basic plot is fairly simple: it follows the life of Heathcliff, an anti-hero, and two families living on the West Yorkshire moors. The mysterious Heathcliff, who’s explored in various periods across his life in the late 18th century, falls in love with Catherine Earnshaw, and becomes obsessed with her- again, a theme echoed in Saltburn.
Other elements familiar to those who loved Saltburn include themes of being an outsider- the young Heathcliff is adopted by the Earnshaw family, and a great big Manor House in which much of the action centres around. Altogether, the classic yet off-kilter love story seems to fit Fennell’s strengths perfectly. The film has been teased with quite the steamy trailer and some provocative imagery, and goes with the tagline “drive me mad”.
