This Quirky New Rom-Com Needs To Be On Your Netflix List

With the ever-increasing popularity of foreign language films and TV in the UK and US, Netflix has been growing its library of exciting international films that would have previously gone under the radar. Shows like Lupin and The Glory have proved to be hits, and so Netflix is going further with their new original movie You Do You, a Turkish language production and social satire about a woman who takes a new job after facing eviction- but finds her new boss isn’t all she expected him to be.
Here’s Everything You Need To Know About You Do You
You Do You is told from the perspective of Merve Kult (Call My Agent!’s Ahsen Eroglu), a young woman with a taste for living like a bohemian. The character originally appeared in the eponymous novel Merve Kult: A Story of Fall and Rebirth by Ceylan Naz Baycan, which became a popular bestseller in Turkey. The oddball eccentric Merve is someone who believes in freedom and being an individual- she sports a bright green jacket, scarlet red headphones and daisy-shaped earrings on the film’s poster. Obsessed with fashion and glamour, Merve takes a job in the PR department of a big fashion company but is at risk of losing everything when she faces eviction from her apartment. Her dad has fallen into debt, and Merve and her family are on the verge of bankruptcy.
Merve falls into a depression and feels hopeless until she comes up with a bright idea. To raise the money to hang on to her career, she decides to create and develop an innovative new dating app to break into the market and attract a loyal user base. Her plan is that the dating app will force everyone using it to wear a mask so that they are focused more on personality in order to find their soulmate. She’s encouraged by her friends to strike out on her own and do so, trusting her own fashionable instincts.
While she sets about putting her ideas into practice however her charming boss Anil (Ozan Dolunay) has other ideas. Anil is a guru and the head of a start-up with the kind of know-how to get her app up and running, but the two personalities are set up to clash over direction.
The quirky rom-com, while featuring an oddball yet loveable lead, is also a social satire on modern life in Turkey and in general, and our addiction to social media and always wanting to be popular.
