1992 Is The New Netflix Thriller To Watch
We’re on the lookout for new foreign TV shows– and not just Squid Game (great as it is). Netflix has been a particularly good place to find shows outside of the English-speaking world, and one of their latest projects is 1992, a Spanish-language show which follows an ex-police officer as she investigates a series of murders connected to a famous expo in the country in the early 90s. The miniseries, starring Marian Alvarez (La unidad), is set to release in mid-December. Here’s all to know:
What is 1992 about?
Alvarez stars as Amparo, a woman who is left widowed after her husband is suddenly killed in a mysterious explosion. Left grieving, Amparo soon discovers that his death may not have been unique, and may not have been an accident. Acting on her suspicions, she decides to investigate her husband’s death more carefully, with the help of Richi, an ex-cop and now security guard. The two find, that creepily, more deaths are occurring, and there’s little question that they’re all murders. All of the deaths follow a similar pattern, where the body is discovered as burnt and charred, and each has a small doll of Curro, the mascot of the Universal Exhibition in Seville, placed near the body.
The 1992 expo was highly popular in the country at the time, but Amparo and the police force investigating the murders are curious as to why the mascot and the expo seem to be being brought up again 30 years later. But the grieving widow is locked out of the formal investigation by the police, with only the alcoholic Richi to support her. Disturbed by the murderer’s strange obsessions and penchant for fire and destruction, Amparo soon finds that her life is in danger. With little help, the amateur pair try to find answers as to why her husband was killed and stop the escalating violence, with more victims likely to be targeted.
Who else stars, and what else do we know?
The mystery thriller mini-series also stars Gorka Lasaosa (Narcos: Mexico) Paz Vega (Kill the Messenger), Mona Martínez (Marmen Mayo), Carlos Santos (Smoke and Mirrors) and Jaime Ordóñez (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent). It’s set to consist of six episodes and arrives on Netflix on 13th December.
