Film fanatics have had a tough run. Not only did cinemas border up their doors back in March, when COVID-19 came sweeping into our lives, but many movie theatres up and down the country still have their projectors firmly switched off, at least until the big, new blockbusters stop getting postponed for months on end.

If, like us, you’re missing your weekly cinematic experience, we may just have found the ultimate summer cinematic experience to tie you over until your local Odeon reopens.

Openaire is a brand new float-in cinema flinging their anchor out at Merchant Square in Paddington this month, in partnership with Häagen-Dazs, making it the first ever UK cinema experience by boat.

Arriving at Merchant Square from 2nd September, the pop-up concept is in collaboration with GoBoat and Merchant Square, and will be bringing with it a giant 6x3m Hi-res LED video screen. The experience will be an intimate one, with only 16 boats and 100 deckchairs available per screening, all socially distanced.

If you’re lucky enough to nab yourself a boating ticket, set sail up to Regent’s Park before you bob on back towards the silver screen. Just, er, try not to lose one of your oars in the murky waters.

Big blockbusters are set to be projected, with everything from Lady Gaga’s film debut in A Star is Born to the heart wrenching romance Titanic. Not forgetting sing-a-long versions of Rocketman and Grease, so make sure you warm up your vocal chords pre-showing.

Level up your usual cinema experience for your children too with a screening of Toy Story and The Lion King, or pretend you’re reclining in Greece with Meryl Streep while you watch the hit musical, Mamma Mia! The Movie.

You can forget your usual popcorn and Pepsi order because Openaire have partnered with pasta pop-up RaviOllie to fuel you through your favourite film, Italian-style. There are pasta boxes on offer, with your choice of pasta, side and sauce. Play it simple with a beef ragu smothered in tomato and basil sauce, or go all out with their caramelised pear and goats cheese ravioli and sage butter. Cool down with a scoop or two of Häagen-Dazs and their ‘Don’t Hold Back’ flavour specials every week.

Book in now for the ultimate al fresco style cinema experience. Let’s just hope the weather holds out…

The Openaire Float-In Cinema by Häagen-Dazs arrives at Merchant Square, Paddington from 2nd – 27th September
