These Are The Colours To Wear This Season

It’s easy to get bamboozled by the tidal wave of trends, from the must-have jacket to the hottest prints, never mind what shade we ought to be wearing. So we’re simplifying the process and breaking down the autumn winter colour trends for 2024.

Firstly, let me start by saying that the catwalks were awash with a veritable rainbow of colours, but the following are by far the stand outs. Secondly, you’ll be pleased to know that while we may refer to these as trends, the ensuing shades are unconditionally timeless. We’re talking soft greys, military-inspired greens and delicious dark reds. By wearing them now you’ll look ever so AW24, but, my fashion friend, you’ll also be wearing them for many seasons to come. Reinforcing the concept of slow fashion; investing in pieces we will wear more than once, this season felt both sophisticated and sensible. Don’t get me wrong, you can still expect fun and a touch of frivolity with extreme fringing, oversized furry coats and bold blooms. However, these are 100% the colours to wear this season to embrace the look of the modern woman.

1. Khaki

From Gucci to Chloé, Saint Laurent to Ferragamo, this beautiful rich shade of green appeared in the form of tailoring, lace-trimmed dresses and opulent caped coats. It may be this season’s big trend, but it is also utterly timeless. Guaranteed never to date, these beautiful olive shades are all about relaxed sophistication. With a nod to combat dressing mixed with stunning modern cuts, this colour trend embraces effortless styling.

2. Burgundy

Undoubtedly one of my favourites, this wine-infused colour is reigning supreme, both on the runways and on stylish influencers. Referred to as oxblood, merlot, and chianti, this is very much a rich and sumptuous hue. It, like many of the other colours to wear this season, feels luxurious and tasteful. In fact, after months of Barbie pink, it imbues a sense of polish, fashion and perhaps, calm. Burgundy suggests we know our power; we are sure of ourselves. And I’m here for that.

3. Grey

Ultimately, you can’t go wrong. It’s not a new colour, a bold colour or showstopping, but it is, without doubt, beautiful. It’s softer than all-black, yet still just as chic. So, unsurprisingly it lends itself to suiting and contemporary tailoring, like the & Other Stories shirts or Abercrombie & Fitch co-ords. Albeit, this steely shade also has a softer side, making it a must for snuggly knits and cosy coats, like those spotted on the catwalks at MaxMara and Michael Kors.

4. Red

There’s no doubt that this electric shade has continued to blaze through the seasons perpetually dominating the colour trends. It’s a fire amidst an ocean of calm, pared back hues; it adds just enough to lift to those grown-up greys and elegant burgundy pieces. On the runways, it didn’t just pop, it lit up. At Sportmax, Balmain, Prabal Gurung, red was omnipresent. Pantone is calling it “Scarlet Smile– a glamorous and decadent red that captures our desire.” Which, of course, it does. Meanwhile, aside from a plethora of scarlet designer creations, the high street is a must for everything from crimson dresses to cherry-coloured sweaters. If your wardrobe needs a boost, then simply add a splash of rouje.

5. Brown

Currently the most hyped shade of the season is none other than the humble brown. Nonetheless, 2024 sees it upgraded to a level of luxury not seen in years. From chocolate-coloured bomber jackets to ’70s-inspired dresses in soft latte, there is a lustre about chestnut hue. It feels cosy yet classy; retro yet refined and everyone from the editors to the street stylers are obsessed. Pair with similar tones to truly embrace this gorgeous, seasonal colour.
