Our Honest Review Of Beauty Of Joseon’s Viral Sunscreen

Every now and then, a beauty product gets so much hype that the internet goes into a mini frenzy, after which the product quickly goes out of stock. With summer around the corner, the latest item doing the rounds online is Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ sunscreen. So, we decided to ask three members of The Handbook to try the product for themselves and report back.
Why it’s trending
Korean beauty (AKA ‘K-Beauty’) skincare is beloved for a reason – it’s damn good. And for context of just how good this sunscreen apparently is, it’s sold over 18.5 million units worldwide. When you team that with the fact it costs just £15, in addition to being super gentle on your skin, it’s no surprise it’s flying off the shelves.

We asked three The Handbook staffers to put the sunscreen through its paces, testing how it applies, wears, and also looking out for issues like pilling and breakouts – here’s what they thought…

Natasha
Why they’re keen to try it: Growing up in Australia, I’m always on the lookout for great SPF50 sunscreens. The problem I’ve found with many, though, is that they pill underneath my makeup, so I’m keen to see if this cult-status one lives up to the hype.
How it applies: The formula is quite watery (in a good way) and absorbs into your skin quickly – a refreshing change from oily sunscreen that leaves a greasy residue. In fact, it absorbs so quickly that I found myself applying more than usual.
How it wears throughout the day: This sunscreen leaves your skin with a dewy (but non-oily) glow, which lasts the whole day.
Is it worth the hype? I would absolutely buy this product and recommend it to friends. I’m interested to see how long a single tube lasts, but it’s a reasonable price point, high SPF protection, and doesn’t pill – three big ticks for me.

Why they’re keen to try it: I’m quite lazy when it comes to using sunscreen and I struggle to find one that doesn’t make my skin break out. So I was very happy to try something that’s been so widely hyped up.
How it applies: It’s super smooth and lightweight, and it feels like a light moisturiser on your skin, nothing more. There’s no residue at all and it feels buttery and silky which I love.
How it wears throughout the day: I used it in the morning and then reapplied it in the afternoon and it wore very well, without making me feel like I had huge weight on my skin. It took my through an early morning walk right up to an afternoon picnic without feeling too heavy or causing any break outs – love!
Is it worth the hype? Absolutely. This might actually make me finally start wearing sunscreen every day.

Why you’re keen to try it: A crime, I know, but I don’t currently wear SPF. I know how important it is, but my skin is so temperamental, sensitive and acne-prone, I haven’t found one that agrees.
How it applies: This sunscreen is lightweight, non-comedogenic, not greasy and has a good absorption time with no white cast.
How it wears throughout the day: It layers really well with makeup, but as someone with a simple skincare routine, I’m unsure about how it layers with other products, but I can imagine it would work, as it doesn’t feel disruptive on the skin.
Is it worth the hype? For me, this is definitely a sunscreen I’d purchase as it ticks all of my boxes and I am so pleased to find one that works for me – finally!

The verdict?
All three testers rated the sunscreen for its lightweight formula, smooth application, and grease-free finish, confirming that, yes, it’s worth the hype. In fact, it’s even converted the non-SPF wearers amongst us, which is the ultimate test, in our opinion.
