From sipping English wine in West Sussex to hiking along dramatic chalk cliffs, the countryside is packed with effortless getaways. Here are some of the best day trip destinations to inspire your next adventure together.

Visit a vineyard

It’s no secret that in recent years, the UK has seriously levelled up its winemaking game, making a vineyard visit the perfect day-trip activity. The best part? You don’t have to travel far from London to access some of the UK’s finest wine offerings. From Chapel Down in Kent to Nyetimber in West Sussex, there are plenty of options just a train ride away. Our top pick goes to another West Sussex gem, Kinsbrook Winery. Book a tour and tasting, then linger over a meal at its restaurant, a converted barn with views straight over the vines to the South Downs, or pick up something from the on-site deli to take home. If you want to make a weekend of it, Kinsbrook is also inviting campers to pitch up a tent within the vineyard.

Explore the British coastline

Few day trips can top a visit to the British coastline, and there are so many great beaches within easy reach of the city. From Cornwall’s sandy stretches, which comfortably rival the Mediterranean, to cobbled seaside towns that look like they’ve been lifted from a film set, a beach trip offers one of the most wholesome and romantic day dates around. This summer, a visit to Whitstable is at the top of my list. This small harbour town on the north Kent coast has built its whole personality around oysters, weatherboarded beach huts, and a slower pace than its bigger seaside rivals. It’s an unhurried kind of day trip, best suited to a slow-paced date rather than a packed itinerary.

For those in search of a little more adventure, a scenic hike is the perfect billing. I’d go as far as to say my visit to The Seven Sisters in Eastbourne last summer was one of the highlights of my entire year. Between the stunning coastal views and the pub pitstops along the way, it made for a day out that was truly hard to top. Direct trains run out from Clapham Junction too, meaning it can easily be tackled in a day. It’s around three to four hours of walking, so pack proper shoes and a picnic, and leave time at the end to explore Eastbourne itself, with its Victorian pier and handful of good independent restaurants for a well-earned dinner. It’s a hike best suited to a couple who want their date to include a bit of a challenge alongside the views.

Beyond this, the UK has plenty of routes to offer, from gentle riverside rambles to full-day climbs, so there’s something to match whatever pace of hike you’re both after.

Get lost in some pretty grand stately grounds

For a date that leans more grand than rustic, Blenheim Palace is hard to beat. This is the only non-royal, non-episcopal house in England allowed to call itself a palace, and it earns the title: it’s the birthplace of Winston Churchill and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set within 150 acres of grounds designed by Capability Brown. It’s a bigger day out than most on this list, around an hour and a half from London by train to Oxford, then a short bus or taxi ride on, so it suits those who want to make a full day of it rather than a quick escape.

Spend the morning exploring the palace’s state rooms and the room where Churchill was born, then head outside for the Formal Gardens, the Water Terraces, the Italian Garden, and the Secret Garden, each one worth lingering in. If the weather holds, pack a picnic for the wider parkland, or finish with tea at one of the on-site cafes before heading back. It’s a hike-free way to get the same sense of scale and escape, best suited to a date that likes a bit of history and grandeur alongside the greenery.

Immerse yourselves in nature

This list wouldn’t feel complete without an honourable National Trust mention, and after asking The Handbook team about their favourite spots, this one came out on top. The deer park at Petworth is a 700-acre landscape, designed by Capability Brown, and is one of the best preserved examples of his work anywhere in the country. Between 700 and 800 fallow deer roam the grounds, part of a herd that’s called Petworth home for over 500 years, reportedly since Henry VIII hunted here in the 1520s.

It’s open every day of the year, dog-friendly, and free to wander if you’re a National Trust member, which makes it an easy one to build a full day around: pair a slow walk through the park with a visit to Petworth House itself, then finish with lunch at the Audit Room Café. Petworth sits in West Sussex, with Pulborough the nearest train station, about 90 minutes from London Victoria, followed by a short taxi ride.

There is truly nothing to make your weekend feel magical like frolicking with a herd of deer. Nor will you ever feel so far away from the grime of the tube when in the shadow of a grand National Trust property, in my case going full send and wearing an aptly cottagecore outfit, feeling suitably Austenian. If you need a breather, this is your answer.

See what the countryside has to offer

As a countryside girl at heart, I believe a trip to the countryside is always a good idea. For a date that blends world-class art with proper countryside at its best, Hauser & Wirth Somerset is one of the best days out in the south west. Set on Durslade Farm on the edge of Bruton, it’s home to five gallery spaces showing major international contemporary art, all free to enter, alongside Oudolf Field, a sweeping perennial meadow designed by Piet Oudolf, the Dutch landscape architect behind New York’s High Line.

Explore the Surrey hills

For a vineyard day that’s right on London’s doorstep, look no further than Denbies. It’s England’s largest single estate vineyard, spread across the Surrey Hills just outside Dorking. Hop on the vineyard train for a ride through the vines with sweeping views, book a cellar tasting that traces the wine from grape to glass, or go further off the beaten path with the Secret Vineyard Tour.

What makes Denbies especially good for a date is what’s right on its doorstep. It sits directly beneath Box Hill, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Surrey Hills and a legendary climb for road cyclists, so it’s easy to build a full day around: a hike or a cycle up Box Hill in the morning, then a wine tasting and lunch at Denbies to recover in the afternoon.
