Eat The Tube: Best Restaurants In Brixton

18th September 2024 | By Patrick Dunne

Brixton is a hub of South London vibrancy and creativity, and that extends to its restaurant scene. Legends have been born here, like Chishuru in Brixton Village and the OG Franco Manca on Market Row, and it still has one of the most diverse, concentrated and delicious food scenes in the capital.

From London’s most exclusive omakase experience and iconic jerk chicken restaurant to an Indian that moonlights as a karaoke bar and Caribbean bottomless brunches, here are the best restaurants in Brixton.

Kurisu Omakase

The dining table at Kurisu is one of London’s most coveted spots, and getting a reservation might make you wish you were trying for Glastonbury tickets instead. Like most Brixton joints, it has a local story – Chef Chris Restapo took over his family’s sushi restaurant Ichiban. What he turned it into is something truly special, and sits at the top of most in-the-know foodies’ bucket lists.

At £150 a head, it doesn’t come cheap and slots in as a special occasion restaurant, but relative to some of the omakase prices you see in London nowadays (often pushing past £300) and for 17-courses, it’s good value.

Naughty Piglets

Founded by Margaux Aubry and Joe Sharratt in 2015, Naughty Piglets is a friendly neighbourhood bistro offering an ever-changing sharing plates menu, and a cellar full of curated natural wines.

Not only is its menu changing, but so is the person who cooks. They have a series of guest chefs who take over the kitchen to mix up the style and cuisine with their own personal twist, so no two visits are ever the same (unless your visiting rates range on weekly).

Kricket

One of London’s favourite curry houses, Kricket is a true Brixton success story. Born in a shipping container in Pop Brixton, it’s gone from strength to strength serving a classic and creative selection of Indian-inspired dishes.

They have restaurants all over the city but because of its history, Brixton is the most special. It sits on the famous Atlantic Road under the railway arches.

Fish Wings and Tings

Arguably the most famous Caribbean restaurant in Brixton, and a staple of Brixton Village. Expect staples jerk chicken, cod fritters, curried goat roti and oxtail stew, topped off with homemade ginger beer and pineapple and ginger punch.

Ensuring no one gets left out, founder Brian Danclair has now opened a veggie outlet directly opposite, aptly named Veg and Tings, serving a completely vegan taste of Trinidad & Tobago.

A neighborhood Tuscan restaurant, Maremma is focused on simple and seasonal regional specialities with fresh pasta made in-house daily, and meat and fish cooked on the charcoal grill.

Wines, salami, cheese and olive oil are imported directly from Tuscany – and be sure to try out their spicy negroni aperitif.

Beb’s Kitchen

This homely Indian restaurant can get as chaotic as it is delicious. Complimentary tea and cassava will keep you ticking over while you wait for traditional Goan curries.

It’s also a great place to book as a group or for a birthday, where they’ll do a special set menu for you – not to mention the karaoke machine that gets wheeled out.

Sarava

The artist formerly known as Senzala, the name change hasn’t the quality in this Brazilian creperie. As well as sweet and savoury crepes you’ll find Brazilian-influenced tapas, and great cocktails.

Be sure to try out their own homemade hot sauce and – insider tip – if you ask your waiter they’ll bring out the extra spicy stuff hidden behind the bar.

Temaki

Another Brixton Village gem, Temaki is London’s first dedicated handroll restaurant, where expert chefs prepare their rolls right in front of you in a traditional Kappo-style dining atmosphere.

Expect signature rolls with otoro tuna, BBQ eel, grilled mackerel and miso aubergine, which can be chosen a-la-carte or as part of a set menu. Don’t skip their extensive sake offering, either.

The Laundry

Brixton is one of the best foodie centres in South London, and The Laundry has one of its best set menus in a converted former laundromat.

They do a light refreshing set menu, perfect for a warm day. They use seasonal produce from delicious radishes to dip in a whipped cod roe, to fresh beef tomato carpaccio with pesto – it’s a must try that won’t break the bank.

Wood and Water

Easygoing Jamaican restaurant Wood and Water is the phoenix rising from the ashes of Three Little Birds, the former restaurant founded by former Miss Jamaica Universe and Apprentice candidate April Jackson.

Their weekend brunch is especially great – must-tries include their signature rum-drenched French toast with poached pear or sweet potato rosti.

Maureen’s Kitchen

A restaurant redefining what having a ‘homely’ feeling means – Maureen’s Kitchen is literally served out of Maureen’s own kitchen and home. Strolling down Railton Road, most would have no idea of the culinary delights being prepared in one of the houses – and it’s free to walk in. Mostly a takeaway spot, they now have outdoor dining in the garden, a great idea if you think you might have to go back for seconds.

Serving Caribbean classics like jerk chicken, curry goat and oxtail stew, this is one of the most beloved hidden gems in Brixton
