See Inside This Scottish Escape On The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond

4th July 2024 | By Astrid Carter

Splendid interiors, spoiling service and undoubtedly one of Scotland’s most spectacular views, you’d be hard-pushed to find a lovelier staycation than Cameron House. The Handbook’s Contributing Fashion & Lifestyle Editor, Astrid Carter, booked in for one night on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Here’s what she thought….

What Sets It Apart

Cameron House is one of those hotels that will delight everyone. From the children cosying into fluffy robes in mini-me sizes and plush bunk beds to couples looking for a romantic Scottish break, complete with four-poster beds, Tartan touches and inviting roll-top baths for two.

But outside of the sleeping quarters  – which I could easily while away a day in – there are countless things to keep old and young amused. From the usual country pursuits like clay pigeon shooting, horse riding and bike rides to a world-class golf course and dedicated spa – if that’s more your thing. There’s even a cool one-screen cinema complete with fresh popcorn and plush red velvet chairs showing kids’ films, classics and new releases, which I’m sure comes in handy on wet Scottish days, of which there are many.

And then there is the Loch itself. The heart and soul of Cameron House and its magical selling point. Whether it’s taking in the oil painting-esque view from your balcony or chartering a slick speed boat on the actual water, it’s hard to beat a view like that. Grounding and mesmerising all at once.

The Location

Nestled on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest loch, the location is pretty unbeatable – have I mentioned that already? The hotel and its grounds look out over the still waters of the UNESCO-protected waters and hills of the Trossachs National Park. A win for golf enthusiasts who can take to its two courses, one a world-class 18-hole along the Loch’s waterfront, the other a more modest green of nine holes within the hotel’s grounds.

This is where Scotland’s highlands and lowlands meet, not only bringing more romance to the famous song but also creating that breathtaking landscape. It’s also only half an hour’s drive from Glasgow’s city centre making it the perfect country staycation to tie into a more lively city break.

Food & Drink

Sadly Cameron Houses’ fine dining restaurant, Tamburrini & Wishart, closed in 2023, which was a big pull for the hotel, for guests visiting just for food rather than a stay. It’s left a bit of a fine dining hole in what is otherwise a faultless offering, but there is still the Cameron Grill for very good Scottish fare, from Scottish grass-fed and dry-aged for a minimum of 21-45 days beef to West Coast lobster. Traditional grills are the backbone of the menu but there are some refreshing twists on local produce, like scallops in an Asian-inspired broth and a monkfish tail curry.

If you’re looking for a pre-dinner cocktail, head up to the Great Scot’s Bar which is unashamedly proud to be Scottish, from the whiskies to the black and white photos of Scottish sporting greats, both of which line the walls. We lucked out on the weather and sat on the balcony overlooking the twinkling Loch and golden-hour sun. There are plenty of whiskey-infused cocktails and drams to take your pick from but I ordered, off-menu, my go-to Aviation which was pleasantly decent.

There’s also an Italian, more casual restaurant perched on the side of the marina serving up small plates and bowls of slippery pasta and more child-friendly dishes, as well as the hotel’s traditional pub, The Tavern, which is sadly closed on Mondays when we visited.

The Rooms

There are multiple options at Cameron House to accommodate different tastes and budgets. We stayed in the new-build part – all crisp white sheets set against bold florals and quintessentially Scottish tartans, and a dark moody but modern bathroom. If you’re after something more traditional – and budget allows – the Auld House rooms and suites are draped in floor-sweeping velvet curtains and elegant panelled walls, and peppered with bold print headboards, tartan throws, jewel-toned sofas and beautiful lighting.

Things To Do

Golf is a main attraction of the hotel but there is also a great spa less than 10 minute’s drive away – the hotel offers a shuttle to and from throughout the day if you’re visiting without a car. The menu offers indulgent treatments using ESPA products but there are also hydro pools, thermal experiences and a rooftop pool looking down on the golf course below.

Adventure seekers brave enough to take not the fiercely cold Loch itself, can book in for anything from paddle boarding to jet-skiing, or, for the less intrepid, a Champagne cruise on the hotel’s private boat, throughout the day.

For something really special, book their speed boat tour of the Loch. The captain will take you on an adrenaline-fuelled ride of the waters stopping to take in unrivalled views of Loch Lomond, pointing out key places along the way and some great historical knowledge of the area. This really was the highlight of the stay – a dolce vita moment, if you will, on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Outside of the hotel, it’s well worth a visit to the village of Luss, with its chocolate box houses, sweet gift shops and a very good pub – The Loch Lomond Arms – nestled beneath the all-encompassing hills above.

The Verdict

Cameron House has nailed the balance of rest and recoup and a jam-packed menu of things to do. It would be hard to get bored by its offerings, whether you want to relax or take on everything the stunning Scottish countryside has to offer. The service is faultless in that professional but friendly way Scots are so good at, but it is the location and the views that really win you over. Utterly breathtaking and a place you’ll be raving about to friends and family as soon as you slump back into reality.

How To Get There

Glasgow Airport is roughly a 30-minute drive away, as is Glasgow Central if arriving by train. Edinburgh Aport is about one hour and 40 minutes drive away.
