A survival thriller starring Lily James and Pierce Brosnan, which doubles as a 90s throwback? Consider us interested. Cliffhanger, which reimagines the Sylvester Stallone classic, follows James’ character, Naomi, who must save her father when he’s kidnapped. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is Cliffhanger about?

The new Cliffhanger isn’t a direct sequel, but more of a reimagining of the original film. It centres on Naomi Cooper (James), an experienced mountain climber who is still haunted by a tragic accident from her past. She returns to the beautiful Dolomite mountain range in northern Italy, where her father Ray (played by Brosnan) runs a luxury mountain chalet and outdoor adventure business. Hoping for a chance to reconnect with her family, Naomi instead finds herself caught up in a terrifying criminal plot which could have deadly consequences.

When Naomi’s younger sister Sydney (The First Omen star, Nell Tiger Free) joins an excursion with the son of a wealthy billionaire, the trip is violently interrupted by a gang of kidnappers, with Naomi as a witness. The attackers seize several members of the group, leaving Naomi as one of the only people able to escape into the mountains. Suddenly, the climbing experiences that have defined her life and often haunted her become the only way to save her family.

As Naomi races across the dangerous mountain terrain, she must evade the kidnappers and try to survive while searching for a way to rescue both Sydney and her father. It’s billed as both a survival thriller with action movie influences mixed in, as Naomi battles not only her pursuers but also the unforgiving environment around her where any mistake could cost her life.

Is there a trailer, and who else stars?

A full trailer has yet to be released, but we do have a few first-look images and promotional posters, while James has posted behind-the-scenes photos of her training for mountaineering. The new film’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who previously helmed the Taron Egerton thriller Carry-On.

Alongside Lily James, Pierce Brosnan and Nell Tiger Free, the cast includes Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba and Bruno Gouery.

When does it release?

The good news is, Cliffhanger is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas next month, so we don’t have long to wait. The official release date is set for August 28th 2026.
