Ever wondered if something is really worth the money? Here at The Handbook, we are all about cost per wear, so we set the fashion team a style challenge. Can one item be that versatile and still be chic?

I have to say, it’s something both Astrid, our Fashion Ed, and I wax lyrical about. When shopping, will this new piece work with my existing wardrobe? Add something joyful? And how many fits will it help create? It’s about the items that will keep on giving.

Hitting the high street, I discovered this lush oversized knit from & Other Stories. At £77, did I love it that much? First off, I looked at the material – a beautiful mix of wool and cotton. Often, we’re sold expensive pieces made of polyester, so this sweater is already proving its worth in terms of quality. Now, how to wear it…

Obviously, it’s going to work with your favourite jeans, but how can we give it that extra something? Astrid layered up with a statement blouse for a slight nod to ’70s cool, but then kept it laid-back, embracing the ‘pop of red’ theory. Darting between meetings, I’m all about the classic knit looking smart – especially when it’s this cold – so I popped on tailored trousers. But as someone who can’t resist a bit of animal print, I had to prove that you need a neutral to balance those wilder patterns.

A grey jumper is great for low-key days, but make it work harder in your wardrobe by layering it with more polished pieces, like a statement bow blouse and animal print heels.

Look 2

I’ve always loved red and pink together, and pairing them with more grounding colours like grey and brown really works. Also, I’ve been wearing a lot of jumpers as scarves this winter – I love the chunky proportion it adds to a look.

Look 3

I’m totally on board with this season’s pop of red theory, so couldn’t resist the grey and red combo. Adding loose tailored trousers and burgundy loafers elevates the look for effortless chic vibes.

Look 4

Love a clashing print, but it’s essential to have a more subtle piece to balance your look. Adding my vintage Sisley blazer was the finishing touch.
