“I’m A Fashion Editor & These Are All The Best Pieces At & Other Stories Right Now”

In the latest instalment of The Handbook’s changing room try-ons, our Contributing Fashion & Lifestyle Editor, Astrid Carter, has headed to & Other Stories to pick out all the best new-ins. From going-out tops that are itching for a Christmas party invite, to brilliant layering pieces perfect for work, and cosy high street knits (because we all know how good they are at Stories), here are her top picks…
There are a couple of things that spring to mind when I think of & Other Stories: Great knitwear, and partywear that offers something just that bit more special than the rest of the high street.
In store this week, I failed to be tempted by the latter (save for this excellent powder blue blouse), but I guess we are still in November, and perhaps there is more to come on the dance-floor-worthy front.
Generous on the fabric, making it look and feel expensive.
What I did find, however, were some truly wearable gems: brilliant layering pieces that will see you through work, weekend, and beyond. First up is the bow-collar blouse. This is a bit of a signature shape for Stories, having done a few iterations in different fabrics and colourways. I can see why, as it’s seriously good. It’s generous on the fabric (which makes it look expensive) and can be worn as a statement piece with the bow flowing at the back, or layered under knits, blazers, and jackets for warmth – the high-neck and billowing sleeves really help on that front.
I’ve been on the lookout for a pillarbox red knit for a while, wondering whether to bite the bullet and buy something a little more expensive than the high street. This Stories sweater is the perfect shade, but it’s a little heavy and fussy for what I’ve been after – I quite like a red knit in a fine knit, very Jane Birkin. The search continues, but this is a great option if you’re after something to cosy up in. It will go with every shade of denim, from inky indigo to retro light washes, charcoal to winter white.
Continuing the lessons in layering, I loved this whole muted look – the changing room lights make it feel a bit yellowy, but the colour palette is actually lovely and soft. Flannel shirts are everywhere this season, whether worn layered over a tee or as a grungy belt. This one is super soft; it actually feels vintage in a good, love-worn way. And these brown barrel leg baggy jeans are near-perfect. They are extra long, which feels really flattering with more wintery shoes like a point-toe boot or suede loafer. The half-zip sweater and pale blue tee don’t appear to be online (check in-store), but I’ve linked similar below.
I love this combo of rose pink, creamy white and deep cherry red, for a winter-approved boho look.
If you’re in the market for some winter workwear, Stories has some excellent options. I love this frilled collar blouse – whilst the blue shade feels very corporate, the neck detail keeps it a little softer. I’ve layered it up over a houndstooth blazer – Stories do some of the best ones on the high street – and this one is so super soft (it’s 80% wool) and will genuinely keep you warm.
An accident waiting to happen, but this off-white sweater feels super luxe.
This caped sweater will add a little drama to weekend denim or navy tailored trousers at the office.
Finally, there are some fabulous accessories on offer at Stories right now – it’s worth checking them out for some cosy stocking fillers. They are on the more expensive end of the high street spectrum, but they feel luxe. I love these long leather gloves worn with a blazer and shirt pushed up at the sleeves; this super cosy balaclava (granted, a Marmite piece but SO warm); and this premium leather deer-print tote – a welcome alternative to leopard.
