Blue is said to be calming, bring serenity and enforce stability and this season it is a major interior trend, from cool icy kitchens to classic cornflower walls. On a more rudimentary level, it also reminds us of sunnier climes – bright blue skies and clear, sparkly seas, yes please – hence why its holiday vibes leave us feeling calm. Blue is everywhere in the interior world right now and it’s moving away from the inky navy that has dominated cocooning living rooms and dramatic kitchens for the best part of a decade. 2024’s blue feels fresh, cool and youthful. Think anything between the realm of icy baby blues to the ultramarine roofs of Santorini and even that cerulean blue made famous by that infamous line spat by Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.

The beauty of pale blue is that it can be used in pretty much any room in the house, from a compact downstairs loo to period-feature living rooms. Case in point, this stunning sitting room by Ash Wilson Design. Drawing inspiration directly from the Leo Gestel piece of art, Ash uses the grounding ‘Blue Stone’ by the Little Greene Paint Company on the walls, and pulls out other colours from the work from rich rusty reds to earthy greens.

Whilst pale blues feel surprisingly cocooning in a living room, in the kitchen they feel modern and fresh. We love the icy blue of fashion and interiors’ influencer, Lucy William’s, mixed against heavy dark woods and brown marbles. In fact, pale blue works brilliantly with a brown full stop, which coincidentally, is another major home trend for 2024.

However, if you are not in the market for repainting a room or committing to a new kitchen, there are more subtle, easy and affordable ways to add blue’s calming charm to your home. Start with the dining table and create a tablescape worthy of an al fresco lunch situation in the Med – we love Mrs Alice’s set of Blue Positano Glasses; Rebecca Udall’s tapered dinner candles in baby shades; and Not Another Bill’s lacquered blue, scalloped edge tray that was made for serving up the drinks at aperitivo hour.

In the bedroom, spruce up your sleeping quarters with Piglet In Bed’s retro-inspired gingham sheets or PROJEKTTYYNY’s charming quilted throws – just as good in a grown-up’s bed as children’s bedrooms. And finally, for a super affordable update with minimum spend, Desenio has so many affordable prints in those cool holiday-inspired azure blue shades. We love the ‘Des Oiseaux’ bird print for a quick summer home update.

Manefest lazy lunches outside by investing in this seersucker striped tablecloth. And if the heavens open? It will look just as good indoors scattered with a tabletop of coloured glassware and raffia placemats.

We’re yet meet an Ottoline print we didn’t love. This charming illustration would look great in a small loo, behind an open-bookshelf or in a cosy hallway.

You don’t need to make big investments to bring the cool blues into your home. Add calming finer details like fresh new bed linen in baby blue gingham or raffia placemats trimmed with ocean hues.
