It wouldn’t be lockdown without endless unnecessary Zoom meetings, bananabread and, of course, Captain Tom hobbling around his garden raising enough money to pay off the national debt.

The centurion war hero will be squeezing back into his running spikes this lockdown to raise funds to support those who feel “lonely and frightened” during the new lockdown and he’ll be challenging others to join him. Supporters are urged to log their walking on social channels using the hashtag #WalkWithTom over the next week with the aim of raising funds for his foundation. The Captain Tom foundation aims to combat loneliness and support those facing bereavement, and is of course a great cause at this uncertain time.

Back in Lockdown-1 the then 99-year-old WWII veteran rose to national attention by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden in an effort to raise money for the NHS. Incredibly, his efforts raised a whopping £33m and he became an overnight ‘national treasure’.

While poor old Joe Wicks was only given a measly MBE for his daily national PE classes, Captain Tom was awarded a knighthood and made an honorary colonel. Sir Tom was given the royal blessing in a private ceremony by the queen.

Perhaps they could spice things up with a few Total Wipeout style obstacles?

It’s unclear exactly the form Captain Tom’s effort will take this time, the weather is far less agreeable for a 100 year old, but he’ll probably return to his garden once again. It’s unlikely, but perhaps they could spice things up with a few Total Wipeout style obstacles?

Either way We’ll all be cheering the elderly gentleman on.
