His Three Daughters Is An Emotional Family Drama With A Star Cast
Any film with Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon is worth paying attention to, which is why we’re definitely intrigued to see new drama His Three Daughters, starring the three as estranged sisters dealing with an ailing father. The film first premiered last year, but will now be arriving next month in a limited cinema release and on Netflix. Here’s all you need to know at what could be a big contender come awards season later this year.
What is His Three Daughters about?
MCU and Love & Death star Olsen plays Christina, one of three sisters who unfortunately don’t get on too well with each other. Lyonne (star of Poker Face ) plays Rachel, while Carrie Coon (set to appear in The White Lotus season 3) plays Katie, all of whom come back together in order to help settle the affairs of their father, Vincent. Vincent (Sneaky Pete’s Jay O. Sanders) is gravely ill, and is not expected to live long, with his children returning to say goodbye. The film takes place mostly in a small, cramped apartment in New York City, and it’s in this close setting that the disagreements and resentments between the three sisters come to the foreground. For various reasons, what should be a close family relationship is dysfunctional and broken, but each woman will need to put their disagreements aside to care for their father in his last days.
Coon’s character Katie is more uptight and serious than the other two, with Rachel (Lyonne) being more of a slouch and fond of recreational drugs, and Christina being somewhere in the middle personality-wise. The three of them have to navigate the difficult and heartbreaking scenario in front of them, as they discuss with carers the end of their father’s life. Much of the conflict is Katie and Rachel in direct disagreement with each other: “Once we get here, she steps back from all responsibility?” Katie says of Rachel’s attitude in the trailer, with the opposite sister saying “We’re different types of people, but that’s my dad too over there dying.” Overall, it’s a touching drama about the strong emotions and relationships, both good and bad, between family members, and the difficulty of saying goodbye.
