Musician and filmmaker Boots Riley, who made Sorry to Bother You and I’m a Virgo, returns in 2026 with his new crime comedy film I Love Boosters. Starring Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Don Cheadlel, Will Poulter and Demi Moore, it’s set in Oakland, California and follows a crew of shoplifters who decide to target a high-end fashion mogul. It mixes absurdist humour with sociological themes and commentary on class, race and protest- here’s all you need to know:

What is I Love Boosters about?

The film centres on a group of shoplifters who dub themselves “boosters” and operate in a stylised version of the San Francisco Bay Area. They’re led by Corvette (Palmer), who mostly hangs out in an abandoned chicken restaurant. Their targets are mostly high-end fashion retailers and designer goods, stealing the most valuable items and reselling them around the area. Other key “boosters” in the group include Mariah (Taylor Paige) and Sade (Ackie).

Corvette is a fashion designer herself, and she soon finds a new target: the powerful and ruthless fashion mogul Christie Smith, played by Moore, whose business practices already put her directly in the gang’s crosshairs. But she really runs afoul of the group when the boosters discover that Christie has stolen one of Corvette’s designs and is beginning her own campaign against them. As their feud escalates, the boosters come up with a plan to steal as much of Christie’s inventory as they can- and might just start a clash between higher-ups in the fashion industry and the workers who make the clothes.

Who else is in the cast?

There are plenty of other colourful characters in the film inhabiting the Bay Area, including Don Cheadle’s pyramid scheme operator, LaKeith Stanfield as a vain model, Poppy Liu as a factory worker, Will Poulter and Eiza González as a store manager and a rebellious employee.

Much like Riley’s surrealist comedy I’m a Virgo, I Love Boosters doesn’t keep itself in a box and mixes various genres, from comedy to crime to political drama. There’s a strong anti-capitalist, anti-consumerist theme to the whole film, as it sharply takes on the fashion industry (in a perhaps more pointed way than another of this month’s releases, The Devil Wears Prada 2).

When does it release?

Riley’s raucous comedy, which has already garnered praise from critics, will release on 22nd May. You can watch the official trailer below.
