From keep-forever coats to cosy knits that will see you through this cold spell, The Handbook’s Fashion & Lifestyle Editor, Astrid Carter, shares the designer pieces worth investing in from the January 2025 sales.

Post-Christmas is my favourite time to shop the sales. If you’re lucky you can find incredible coats you’ve been eyeing up for months, investment boots that will see you into spring, and party wear so good it’s worth buying now and saving for next year.

I do have some hard and fast rules, however…

1. Don’t buy anything you don’t really LOVE. Just because it’s 50% off doesn’t mean you need it.

2. Will it work in your existing wardrobe? Think about the cost per wear you’re going to get out of it and whether it’s really worth it.

3. Don’t buy what you’ve already got. Just because an Isabel Marant grey knit is half-price doesn’t mean you need to add it to your already five grey knits. I will, however, caveat this by buying smart. If there are key pieces in your wardrobe that are genuinely your uniform, it’s always worth stocking up in the sale if your existing pieces are feeling a little tired.

4. Shop for investment accessories. The sales are a great time to invest in some high-ticket pieces, whether that’s winter boots or a cult bag you’ve had your eye on for years. Just remember only what you need, what is practical and what is going to serve the rest of your wardrobe.

5. Think about the long game. Use the sales as an opportunity to grow your wardrobe in responsible ways, whether that’s buying better quality, natural fabrics or shopping from sustainable and ethical brands with a conscience. I steer clear of high street sales unless it’s something I know I will wear forever.

6. Invest in higher-priced fabrics while they are discounted. Whether you’re on the lookout for a great pair of leather trousers or have always dreamed of a shearling coat, now is the time.

7. Buy pieces that will bring you joy. As much as sale season is a chance to build on an effortless capsule wardrobe, it’s also a great excuse to invest in those hero pieces that will bring joy to your wardrobe. Case in point, the By Malene Birger’s faux fur coat of dreams. If you love it, you will wear it and that doesn’t mean it has to be the safest option.

Scroll to shop some of my top picks from the January sales, from the ankle boots that will go with almost every winter outfit to a near-perfect Max Mara oversized blazer that will be cherished for years to come…

First launched in the 1970s, Loewe’s iconic Flamenco clutch is reworked in cosy buttermilk yellow shearling. Great with inky denim in the day and elegant with off-white silk after-hours.

The January sales are the perfect time to stockpile your knitwear. Selected, as seen on  upcoming influencer, Huda AKA @ahalcyongirl, come in a clean colour palette, classic cuts and sumptuously soft fabrics. Plus, they are seriously affordable for the quality… especially in the sale.

The oversized shape. The strong shoulder. The intricate details. Ulla’s Vedi trench is near perfect and an absolute steal in their flash January sale.
