Everything To Watch At The Cinema In June
Fancy a trip to the cinema stacked with popcorn, pop and blockbusters? This month sees some big-name films land on the big screen. From Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and the return of Spiderverse to Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings film, these are the films we’ve excited for…
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny
Dr. Jones returns for a final outing as Harrison Ford dons the hat and whip one last time. Now an adventurer in old age, one of cinema’s most iconic heroes is back on one final quest. Set in 1969 against the backdrop of the space race, Indy will once again come up against his old foes, the Nazis led this time by the supposedly reformed Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) and henchman Klaber (Boyd Holbrook). As they race to find a mysterious artefact that has evaded Indy throughout his life, the archaeologist is joined by his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller Bridge) and old friend Sallah (John Rhys Davies). This installment is directed by Logan and Ford V Ferrari director James Mangold.

Asteroid City
Wes Anderson makes his welcome return with new project Asteroid City, and sees him (apparently) foray into sci-fi. The film so far has gotten good reviews at Cannes for its reliably whimsical nature, which concerns the exploits of the students and parents attending a Junior Stargazer competition taking place in a remote desert town in 50s America. As the group of strangers get together for recreation and competition, there’s a concern that there might really be something extra-terrestrial looming over them. Expect plenty of cinematic eye-candy, an oddball screenplay and an eclectic cast that includes names like Scarlett Johannson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Jeffery Wright, Tilda Swinton, Maya Hawke, Edward Norton, Bryan Cranston and many more.

The Boogeyman
The latest story by master of horror Stephen King to be put to screen, The Boogeyman is set to release this month to provide your horror fix. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina, it tells the story of a young high school student, Sadie, who is struggling to cope following the death of her mother. She also has to care for her younger sister Sawyer, while trying to support her grieving but distant father Will. Will is a therapist but doesn’t give either child proper help or comfort, and the family is growing more and more apart. Out of nowhere, a patient seeking Will’s advice arrives at their house, but their desperate cries for help are not the only thing they’ve brought with them: a terrifying entity soon manifests itself and feeds on the family’s suffering.

Elemental
Pixar’s latest is an opposites-attract romcom set in a world where everyone is a walking, talking element of nature. Ember, a fire element (played by Nancy Drew’s Leah Lewis) meets Wade (Jurassic World: Dominion’s Mamoudou Athie), a water element, and starts to fall for him, despite their very obviously opposite nature. Wade is pretty emotional and prone to crying, and Ember has a fiery temper and is at risk of being extinguished for good should she come into contact with water. To make things worse, her father, Bernie (Ronnie del Carmen) runs their family convenience store and has a hatred and prejudice for anyone who isn’t like him (eg a fire element.) The two elements try to navigate these problems and make things work out.

No Hard Feelings
Jennifer Lawrence stars in this coming-of-age sex comedy, opposite Dear Even Hansen and A Tourist’s Guide to Love star Andrew Barth Feldman in the No Hard Feelings film. Lawrence plays Maddie, a young New Yorker who has a job working for Uber as a driver. Her car is suddenly repossessed, and, already at the end of her tether, becomes desperate to avoid bankruptcy. To remedy this, she decides to take a pretty unusual Craigslist offer: agree to be the “girlfriend” of the 19-year-old Percy (Barth Feldman). Percy is an introvert who has apparently no interest in either dating or having a sex life, and his parents (played by Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti) offer Maddie a car to pay off her debts, in exchange for dating their son.

Spiderman Across The Spiderverse
The eagerly awaited follow-up to the 2018 smash hit Into The Spiderverse, Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse sees the return of the young Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) , who’s now a fully-fledged superhero. To his surprise, he’s contacted by his old friend and love interest Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), who informs him that their world and reality are under threat. Mysterious villain The Spot has set in motion a plan that could potentially destroy every single universe with Spider-People in them, and Miles teams up with Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), and the Spider-Society, led by Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). However, Miles soon finds that he and Miguel are at odds and that he doesn’t know who he can trust as he attempts to navigate the confusing Spider-verse to try and save his world before it’s too late.
