We love London, we really do, but it’s not exactly the most relaxing city in the world, is it? While the capital might be brimming with luxury spas, where you can indulge in everything from bathing in wine (yes, really) to freezing your own body fat, sometimes you just need to get out of the Big Smoke. So we’ve rounded-up the best spas only two-hour’s from London. Breathe in that country air, switch off and return to work on Monday a brand new person…
Re-balance your hectic work schedule with a day-off at Beaverbrook Hotel & Spa. Firstly, we have to talk about the interiors of this place – they are out of this world (a pitstop in the bar is a must). But the recently opened spa is equally impressive, offering everything from bespoke osteopathy to reflexology treatments. And the best bit? It’s less than an hour from London.
If you’re looking for a pamper session within the M25, The Grove’s Sequoia Spa is the place. Offering winter exclusive spa treatments like the ESPA winter back reviver and a sparkle facial to slough off dry skin, this is a great place to relax and unwind. And to top it all off it’s only a 50-minute drive from Central London.
Tapping into their city’s spa heritage, The Gainsborough Hotel in Bath offers a world-class spa experience. Set beneath a glass atrium, guests can soothe away their woes in the natural thermal pools or with a classic aromatherapy spa treatment. Bring your partner along and enjoy a cosy couples massage.
With a Michelin-starred restaurant and unrivalled country views this is a great spa getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Make a weekend of it and book into the hotel, dine like a king and have every tense knot soothed away.
Lime Wood Hotel’s custom spa, Herb House, is every yoga and wellness-lovers’ dream. Stretch those aching muscles with a rooftop yoga session in the beautiful herb garden or admire the New Forest when taking a dip in the outdoor heated pool. Why not treat yourself to a clean beauty facial or a soothing leg and foot massage? There’s a reason, or rather several, why this hotel and spa is consistently on people’s top picks lists.
Nothing says cosy quite like Dormy House. This cute farmhouse retreat is the opposite of the hustle and bustle of London, with pretty pastel interiors and wholesome, seasonal food. The Scandi-inspired House Spa has everything from a hot juniper sauna to an experience shower (sounds fun) to a salt-infusion therapy room, as well as a range of indulgent treatments. Treat yourself to a deep heat mud mask or a citrus body scrub to feel new and rejuvenated. Heads up: you won’t want to leave.
Rich in history, the world renowned Cliveden House offers a seriously luxe weekend away. Eat in the decadent dining room or the grill for a more relaxed vibe, walk the historic grounds or take a boat ride on the river before heading to the hotel’s spa for some much needed R&R. The spa boasts a range of holistic and natural spa treatments, think warm oil massages and pink Himalayan salt body exfoliation. Oh, and did we mention it’s a favourite of Meghan Markle’s too…
With grand gardens that make you feel like you’re in a Jane Austen novel, Champney’s Tring Spa’s delights don’t stop there. Their custom relaxation hideaway, complete with faux-fur throws and fire crackle ASMR sounds, will have you snoozing into a deep slumber. Make a weekend away of it and be treated to a custom three-course healthy menu and a sauna room that will detox your stresses away.
Switch off from the London life at Ockenden Manor Spa. Clear your mind (and your pores) with some of their innovative treatments. We love the Mindspace treatment, which includes a de-stressing massage and relaxing breathing techniques. If your bones are feeling a bit creaky or you’ve had trouble sleeping, submerge your muscles in their Isopod floatation tank which not only has soothing properties but can send you into a deep sleep. Finish the day off with their Spa’fternoon Tea. A great place for a mother/daughter or girls’ weekend away.
If you’re in need of a poolside holiday but the budget or the time off won’t stretch, head to Pennyhill Park. This aqua spa boasts an impressive outdoor pool, a bespoke hydrotherapy pool and some deluxe heated outdoor jacuzzi’s, so you can swim until your finger tips are like prunes. Their unique thermal treatments are a must-try – they cool your body temperature back down after a steamy sauna in their custom ice igloo room…brrrrilliant!
Luton isn’t the first place that springs to mind when you think of glitz and glam, but just 10 minutes from our least favourite airport sits Luton Hoo. You may recognise the mansion house from a number of films including Four Weddings & A Funeral and various Bond movies, but it’s the spa that’s winning us over. Set in the old stable building, the pool area is beautifully bright and airy, whilst the spa menu offers indulgent treatments from one of our favourite brands, ESPA.
Nestled near Bath, England’s birthplace of natural spas, it’s no wonder Lucknam Park is one of our favourites. As the worst winter on record reportedly storms in, beat the winter blues by cosying up to the poolside fire and warm-up during a relaxing hot stone massage. For a real country experience, book the Saddle & Spa package for a chance to ride through the 500-acre parkland before unwinding in the spa. Bliss.
