Christmas lights, Christmas trees, Christmas markets, Christmas terraces, Christmas pop-ups. You just can’t escape. But why would you want to, it is the most wonderful time of the year after all and we’ve been desperately waiting for this time of year since, well, probably Boxing Day last year. Now that it is finally socially acceptable to talk about Christmas on a daily basis you’ll probably want to see how many activities you can squeeze festivity into. Here are our pick of 7 of the most festive cocktails in the city:
Cocktail Trading Company Smithfield
What: Citizen Cane
Why: Known for serving cocktails in welly boots, Chinese takeaway boxes and Brasso tins, Cocktail Trading Company Smithfield have made a snow-globed shape space on their menu; say hello to the Citizen Cane. A perfectly balanced concoction of Cachaca, rosebud tincture, cardamon-vanilla infusion, lime juice and Sauvignon Blanc, the mixologists have passed the duties over to you; shake the snow globe up before you sip. Oh, and ask for Janice when you enter – CTC make themselves hard to find.
Where: 50-52 Long Lane, Smithfield, EC1A 9EJ
Dirty Martini Hanover Square
Oxford Circus (0.1 miles)
What: Pistachio & Toasted Pineapple Sour
Why: Unsurprisingly, martinis rule the roost at Dirty Martini but the new Winter menu adds 12 new cocktails to the bill, just to make choosing a little more difficult. Martinis are laced with dragon fruit, pomegranate, raspberry and almond (not all together), Banoffee & Cashew Creme with toasted marshmallows is a wintery take on the Pina Colada but we like the sound of the Pistachio & Toasted Pineapple Sour, mainly because it contains the wonderfully titled Quiquiriqui Mezcal amongst Absolut Vodka, crushed pistachios, coconut water, caramel syrup and homemade pineapple syrup. One of our 5-a-day?
Available at all Dirty Martini locations.
Where: 10c Hanover Square, London, W1S 1JH
What: The Gingerbread Colada
Why: In the depths of Soho lies a very colourful Latin cocktail bar – a change to the dimly lit speakeasy’s dotted nearby. A recent refurbishment has made it brighter still and a Christmassy spin has been put on the much-loved Pina Colada, served with a cute gingerbread man. Santa Teresa Gran Reserva Rum is shaken up with pineapple and coconut, garnished with a glacé cherry and a sprinkling of crushed gingerbread.
Where: 6 Poland Street, Soho, W1F 8PS
Ask For Janice
What: Berry Christmas
Why: Ask For Janice are going to get you in the festive spirit with some festive spirits (we’re great with the jokes, aren’t we?). They’ll be serving up cocktails such as the Berry Christmas – a flute of Janice’s own slow gin with bittersweet cranberry syrup and topped with prosecco. Once you’ve had a few of those you’ll need the Janice Eggnog the next day, made with a whole egg and dried nutmeg – the perfect hair of the dog pick me up.
Where: 50-52 Long Lane, EC1A 9EJ
The Jam Tree Chelsea
Imperial Wharf (0.3 miles)
What: Guaranteed Netflix and Chill
Why: Jam Tree Chelsea and Clapham have a new menu of winter cocktails with nostalgic drinks including Apple Crumble and Rhubarb and custard sweets, but the one we’re most looking forward to: The Netflix and Chill. Winter is the time for snuggling up with your loved ones for a little film watching and ahem chill but if you’re single, fret not have this drink instead. A combination of Vanilla Vodka, butterscotch liqueur, caramel and lemon and all served in a large popcorn cup!
Where: 541 Kings Road, Chelsea, London, SW6 2EB
The Capital Hotel
Knightsbridge (0.2 miles)
What: Hot Toddies
Why: The Capital hotel are keeping things classic this year with a hot toddy. Get it at their bar, preferable as a pick me up during the nightmare that is Christmas shopping. If there was ever a reason to need a drink – that is it.
Where: 22-24 Basil Street, Knightsbridge, London, SW3 1AT
Sloane Square (0.8 miles)
What: Mulled Wine
Why: No drink says Christmas more than mulled wine. It’s the epitome of the Christmas in a drink. And the Gladwin brothers will be serving up mulled wine by the bucketful – well they will be if we’re drinking there…head to The Shed or Rabbit to warm your cockles this Christmas with a glass of mulled wine and a hot toddy or two.
