Everyone loves a pub quiz, don’t they? Until they realise their general knowledge isn’t as good as they thought it was. But who cares? London plays hosts to some seriously fun quiz nights, from nights for movie buffs where questions appear on the big screen to ‘The One With The Friends Quiz’, which you can imagine tests your knowledge on the famous six. The best bit? Coming up with your team name. We’re fond of Simple Minds, Beyoncé Know-Alls and the brazen, We’re Googling Everything.
Monday night is quiz night at this charming Kentish Town pub and while the staff may be friendly the competition is fierce. One for brain boxes, the questions are notoriously difficult = prepare to delve deep into that GCSE knowledge you never thought you’d need. Tasty Thai food is also served to soften the blow if you lose, which is quite likely.
Without a doubt London’s poshest pub quiz is at members’ club Annabel’s. The monthly series has welcomed hosts such as Jimmy Carr , Rory Bremner and Nick Grimshaw – it is Annabel’s after all. First place winners will receive a bottle of champagne per player, a bar tab of £250 for the team, tickets to Jimmy’s show (if he’s hosting) and a picture with the host on Annabel’s Instagram. The loosing team win the famous Annabel’s quiz night wooden spoon. Even that’s probably chic given it’s from Annabel’s.
Once a month, dates vary
Think you know all the words to Smelly Cat, what Joey’s character on Days of Our Lives was called or how many times Ross and Rachel really did go on a break? Prepare to get more competitive than the Gellers playing touch ball at Thanksgiving, at London’s pub quiz for Friends fanatics.
Islington’s most iconic pub quiz won’t necessarily test your general knowledge but your ability to let loose on a Tuesday night. Expect shots, big prizes, dirty doodling, ‘Kazookeoke’ and general ridiculousness with the pub’s legendary host, Amy Beesting.
The Boogaloo is a Highgate institution not just for the fact that Shane MacGowen lives above it and can often be found sinking a few in there, but also for it’s pub quiz. Taking place every Wednesday, it’s London’s longest standing and features all the classic rounds from music to film and pop culture. Music fans can also revel in a few celeb spots as many a Rockstar has been spotted in the iconic north London boozer. Heads up: the name ‘Who Killed Bambi’ is an obscure Sex Pistols reference, so expect more music trivia than Disney facts.
One of London’s best-loved quizzes, The Super Star Quiz is here to make your Tuesdays a hell of a lot more fun and your Wednesday’s a hell of a lot more hungover. Wallflowers need not enter – bonus points are dished out for animal impressions, singing and dad dancing. Booking ahead is advised as is leaving your dignity at the door.
Expect celebrity gossip and filthy arts and crafts at this raucous pub quiz. Comedian Tom Webb takes to the mic testing teams on everything from puzzles to music questions and good old fashioned guesswork. Definitely one for those that don’t take themselves too seriously.
This East London boozer is owned by none other than Sir Ian McKellen – yes, really, but it’s anything but A-list. For just £1.50 entry per person, punters can join in the Monday night fun with hopes to win a £50 bar tab. Bonus points for spotting Gandalf himself as he often takes part.
Like a real life version of Nevermind the Buzzcocks, you’ll need to be a music buff to win the £60 top prize. Rounds include Name That Tune, Identify the Popstar and Spot the Intro, all presented by the potty-mouthed quizmaster Paul Guided Missile. A packet of multipack crisps goes to the team with the best name – how spoiling.
Think you know your Spielberg from your Scorsese? Movie nerds go head to head in this glitzy two-hour quiz projected on the big screen – surely the only way to do a film themed pub quiz? Expect a feast for the sense and classic nostalgia with throwback movie posters, cult clips and ‘oh, I know this one’ soundtracks. The quiz has recently popped up in Los Angles – how very Hollywood.
