Emily Blunt Is Set To Star In Spielberg’s New UFO Movie
2024 has been a good year for movies– but there’s even more exciting films just over the horizon. One to keep an eye on is the next film from cinematic legend Steven Spielberg, who’s been hard at work at a new sci-fi project, following his acclaimed film The Fablemans. It’s not set to arrive on screens for a while yet, but we’ve got the first few details, including that it’ll star Emily Blunt in the lead. Here’s all you need to know.
What do we know about the film?
This, of course, is far from the first time Spielberg has made a sci fi film, with the director having previously made hits like E.T, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and War of the Worlds. So, there’s a fair amount of expectation and anticipation for this new project, especially following the more drama-focused The Fablemans and West Side Story.
Despite this interest though, it’s still early days as the filmmaker assembles the blockbuster production, and much of the details are still under wraps at Universal Studios. However, some first details have emerged: the plot is set to concern the extra-terrestrial and specifically UFOs, which feels timely given the increased interest in mysterious sitings in recent years. The script will be written by David Koepp, who previously penned both War of the Worlds and Jurassic Park, and has the intriguing working title of The Dish.
Who’s set to be in the cast, and what else do we know?
The big name joining the cast as the main lead of the film is Emily Blunt, recently seen onscreen in The Fall Guy and Oppenheimer. We don’t know exactly what her character will be, but expect to see Blunt getting involved in investigating paranormal sightings. While the cast isn’t 100% confirmed, Empire has reported that Josh O’Connor (Challengers), set to also appear in Knives Out 3 is in talks to come onboard Spielberg’s film.
Meanwhile, Universal has tantalisingly described the project as “an event film”, teasing the kind of mega-blockbusters Spielberg has previously been known for. If that sounds exciting to you though, you’ll have to wait a while, as it’s not scheduled to release until 15th May 2026. Until then, keep an eye out for more details and an official trailer.
