The colour-pop, jazzy print knit is no stranger to a women’s wardrobe, but what happened to the guys? Now that sweater season is well and truly here, we want to bring some fun and joy to menswear too. From quirky prints on retro vests to ombre jumpers and rainbow-striped cardigans, here are the best statement jumpers for men to rock this cold spell.

Navy, grey and black may be your go-to but have you considered bringing more peppy prints and saccharine shades to your knitwear arsenal? The AW23 menswear collections were awash with a kaleidoscope of colourful knits. At Marni there were fluffy pink and green stripes, whilst at Burberry there were new riffs on classic Argyll prints in deep jewel tones.

Nick Grimshaw is perhaps the poster child for how to wear a striped knit. From rainbow colourways to playful prints, it feels quite Kurt Cobain meets runway fashion.

It’s been an epic year for fashion collaborations too, from H&M’s partnership with Rabanne to Simon Miller for Mango, and the boys haven’t missed out either. Two knitwear titans have joined forces this season – The Elder Statesman and Zegna – to marry the former’s laid back LA vibe with the latter’s high-end Italian craftsmanship. The result is a perfectly slouchy,  grungy striped knit – ideal for pairing with cargo pants or baggy jeans for a nod to ’90s skate style.

For something a little more affordable, check out stylist Harry Lambert’s collab with Zara. If you’re not familiar with the name, you will be with the work – he is responsible for making Harry Styles’ iconic fashion sense what it is today, from thought-provoking editorial shoots to that tour wardrobe. His Zara collection dropped last week with the cutest bunny-motif retro-print jumper. Wear it with slacks, classic Converse and Harry Style energy.

When it comes to inspiration, TV and radio presenter Nick Grimshaw is perhaps the poster child for how to wear a striped knit. Check out his Instagram for perfectly oversized shapes, playful details like fringing and distressing, and rainbow colourways that come together to feel quite Kurt Cobain-meets-runway fashion.

Men’s cardigans are everywhere this season and influencer and model Jordan Hames proves they don’t need to be boring or old fashioned. Look for fuzzy mohair textures, clashing prints and acid house-inspired colours to bring them into 2023.

Call it the Harry effect, but sweater vests are getting plenty of airtime in both women’s and menswear collections lately. Lean into the retro look and go for a statement style, from Awake NY’s daisy crochets to LaDoubleJ’s cutesy cherry prints (actually from the womenswear line but rules are there to be broken, right?)

Style with nothing underneath for a modern feel (and if weather permits), with a `t-shirt for a casual take, and with a long-sleeved, dagger collar shirt for a vintage-inspired touch.
