How To Style Cargo Pants

Whether you were old enough to indulge the first time around or not, the ’90s trend is back for SS23. From denim iterations to those khaki parachute pants, here’s how to style cargo pants version 2.0.
We all know that fashion is cyclical and that there will be times when a trend comes back that either completely haunts you or makes you want to lean right with a loving sense of nostalgia. One of those marmite trends that’s currently making waves on the runway is the cargo pant trend. In the ’90s, they were everywhere. Paired with barely-there bandana tops or spaghetti strapped vests, baggy plaid shirts or voluminous bombers, and spotted on just about every pop star from the Spice Girls to TLC. These days, it’s the Instagram set that are spearheading the trend, with the likes of Pernille Teisbaek, Ellie Delphine AKA Slip Into Style, and Luna Isabella all styling them up.
And even if you do sit in the “no, never again camp,” take a look at the way these Insta stars work them for SS23, from a cosy knits and denim look to a polished tailored approach, these might just change your mind…
Look 1
A cargo pant in denim feels a little tricker to wear, so keep the rest of the look grown-up and understated with a luxe creamy knit and square-toed loafers – perfectly demonstrated by Danish style blogger, Pernille Teisbaek. High-end brands such Isabel Marant and Dolce have turned their cargo iterations to denim this season, but there are plenty of high street versions for a fraction of the price, like this great Weekday pair.
Look 2
London stylist and Instagrammer, Danielle Ward AKA Little Fash Bird, flips the look on its head by pairing creamy tailored cargo pants on the bottom half with this Mango denim shacket. Finish the look with smart, black leather accessories.
Look 3
Play off the tomboy feel of a pair of cargo pants by pairing it with an otherwise sugar sweet hued look. We love how Luna Isabella has paired hers with a fuzzy pink knit and fun, playful jewellery. Top off with Chanel’s chunky trainers (you can get similar styles on lots of pre-loved fashion sites) or look to New Balance and Adidas Gazelles for more affordable options.
Look 4
Ellie Delphine AKA Slip Into Style showcases how cargo pants can be sophisticated. She pairs her Dion Lee parachute pants with a statement knit, aviator jacket and polished gold jewels and a point-toe heel, for a grown-up take on the trend.
Look 5
Finally, Valeria Kei takes two of the moments hottest pieces – The Frankie Shop’s tailored cargo trousers and Nanushka’s puffa jacket – and brings them together in this all-black weekend look. Whilst the foundations of the outfit is fairly smart, Valeria keeps it laid back with trusty Converse and a winter beanie.
