It is of course Valentine’s this weekend, and if you’re in need of a direction to channel your affections then why not give your wardrobe some love. Show long-term commitment by investing in this power couple – trust us, a denim shirt and stripe jumper will never let you down.

If there’s one thing we can say about dressing right now, is that it’s taken a very practical turn. But just because your wardrobe is functional, that shouldn’t make it void of style. If there’s two things you should always have on hand (or hanger), it’s a denim shirt and striped sweater. Together they are couple goals and the epitome of French-girl cool.

As all-year round elevated basics, they work tremendously well as a pair, as well as completely independently. They’re grown-up yet youthful, always fresh and relevant and they ooze easy-appeal.

Alone, denim serves at the crux of many an off-duty wardrobe. This season though, as well as plenty of classic denim shirts we’re seeing more feminine details taking hold like pie-crust collars, puff sleeves and pussy-bows.

A French classic, the Breton stripe has also been promoted from simple cotton tees to cosy crew-neck knits and of-the-moment half-zip jumpers. New York brand La Ligne has some of our favourite forever styles – they believe in the “universal appeal” of the stripe. A quick peek at their Insta and you’ll see everyone from Cindy Crawford to Dan Levy (David from Schitts Creek) wearing their knits.

For more how-to-wear inspiration look to model and influencer Gabrielle Caunesil. Her French label La Semaine Paris creates 100% sustainable capsule collections, their current offering includes a relaxed striped sweater crafted in regenerated wool.

There’s no question about it, denim shirts and stripe jumpers are meant to be together. They have heritage and integrity, will pick you up on an uninspired day, and travel the world with you – they are a sure thing in terms of investment. So, beat the Valentine’s blues and shop our favourite buys below.
