Inside Torralbenc: Menorca’s Michelin-Starred Boutique Hotel

12th September 2024 | By Harriet Smales

At The Handbook, we’re big foodies, so when we were invited to a Mr & Mrs Smith Michelin-starred hotel in sunny Menorca, we jumped at the opportunity. Having caught a flight from London Gatwick at 7am, we were poolside with a cocktail by 12 noon local time, making Torralbenc the perfect Balearic getaway for a long weekend or week (subject to available annual leave). Here’s what we thought of the European destination.

First impressions

As we drove amongst the rolling vineyards towards the hotel on Menorca’s southern coast, we knew we were in for a treat. Within a 15-minute drive from the airport, we arrived at Torralbenc, a boutique hotel comprised of a series of restored farmhouses, that blend rustic charm with refined elegance. Greeted with a homemade lemonade as our bags were whisked off to our room, we sat in the courtyard soaking in traditional Menorcan farm and pink bougainvillaea arches.

What sets it apart

If the vineyards, 25-metre saltwater infinity pool and landscaped gardens weren’t enough to win us over, what truly distinguishes Torralbenc is the food. Having already been convinced by its Michelin status, Chef Gorka Txapartegi exceeded our expectations, delivering a menu that combined traditional Menorcan cuisines with a fine dining flare. The Menorcan limestone walls, coastal views, and roaming wild tortoises also add to its charm.

The rooms

Rooms at Torralbenc are understated yet chic, with a focus on natural materials and neutral tones. Our sea view room allowed us to admire the Mediterranean in the comfort of our private courtyard, surrounded by rosemary, lavender and bougainvillaea. For those seeking the ultimate retreat, the Torralbenc Cottage offers a private plunge pool and extra seclusion.

The facilities

The hotels infinity pool that overlooks the coastline has to be one of the highlights, were we enjoyed many peaceful hours reading, playing backgammon and sipping on their signature cocktail. No stay is complete without a trip to the hotels small but well-equipped spa. A 60 min massage at the end of a hard day by the pool was a real treat. For those feeling a little more active, the hotel is equipped with bicycles that allow guests to explore the surrounding countryside. For fellow wine lovers, their vineyard tour and tasting is also a must, at €25 per person.

Food & drink

Dining at Torralbenc is an exceptional experience. The on-site restaurant, which earned a Michelin star this year, serves Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Having spent two nights at the hotel, we manage to work our way through the both the à la carte and 7 course tasting menu, that features an appetiser, two starters, rice, fish, meat and two exquisite desserts. The catch of the day and grilled old beef chop were by far the stars of the show, not to mention Torralbenc own wines which were enjoyed with every meal (bar breakfast).

Things to do nearby

Menorca’s crystal-clear beaches are just a short drive away, including the Cala Mesquida, Caló Blanc. If you have a car, Cala Mitjaneta and Cala Macarelleta are definitely worth a visit on the south coast. For adventure seekers, hiking trails and boat tours offer a chance to explore the island’s natural beauty. The famous Cova d’en Xoroi, a bar set in a cliffside cave, is a must-visit for breathtaking views, only a 5-minute taxi from the hotel. Menorca’s capital, Mahon is also only a 15-minute drive, perfect for an evening of shopping and exploring local restaurants. A special shout out to Bambu in Cala Pequeña as well, perfect for a long lunch in a laid-back but vibey beachfront setting.

The verdict

It goes without saying that Torralbenc has our hearts and will be at the top of our recommendations for anyone seeking a laid-back Balearic getaway. If you’re anything like us, a holiday should be a retreat that feels worlds away from the every day and Torralbenc definitely delivered. Last but not least, every member of staff went the extra mile to make our stay seamless and stress-free and were extremely knowledgeable on the local area and things to do.

How to get there

Over the summer months, there are ample flights from all London airports, taking just over 2 hours direct. The hotel offers a private transfer service and is only a 15-minute drive from the airport. Although the hotel has everything you could ever want from a holiday, we’d also highly recommend renting a car to explore the island and stunning beaches. The hotel provides ample on-site parking.

Bookings can be made directly through Mr & Mrs Smith.
