Based On A True Story was one of the pleasant surprises of 2023, with the Kaley Cuoco series being a fun send up of true crime podcasts and leaving us on a cliffhanger that a season 2 would have to resolve. That follow up is finally here, with the second season following Ava (Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) dealing with being parents, as well as trying (and falling) not to get sucked back into the world of true crime investigations. Here’s everything you need to know as the season debuts in the UK this month:

What is Based on a True Story about?

A quick recap: Based On A True Story’s first season followed Ava and Nathan, a couple expecting their first child and with a strong obsession with true crime- and decide to start a true crime podcast with an actual murderer, plumber Matt (Tom Bateman). Things as you might guess become chaotic, with the podcast becoming more and more popular, and bodies beginning to pile up as Matt becomes even closer to their lives. In the season finale, as their friend Ruby’s dead body turns up and they try to get rid of it, they’re confronted by her estranged husband Simon (Aaron Staton), who challenges them on the fact they’re mopping up blood.

Season 2 catches us up with Ava and Nathan, as they tend to their new baby and try to recover their standing after being “cancelled” for their morally dubious podcast last time around. Ava in particular is now deterred not to be tempted back into the world of true crime- but she can’t quite resist it, especially when a new series of murders crop up. They’re sure that Matt must of course be the one behind the killings, but is he? Matt himself meanwhile is in a growing relationship with Tory, Ava’s younger sister and while he might be seemingly trying to redeem himself, she’s no doubt in serious danger. As Ava tries to work out if the murderer is Matt or a copycat, the pressure is on.

Who else stars?

The new season also stars Liana Liberato (Scream VI), Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Sara Paxton (Barbarian) and Casey Wilson (Physical). Following its release in the US last month, it’s now arrived on streaming in the UK on Sky Max and NOW.
