Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Is Finally Out In Cinemas This Weekend

5th September 2024 | By Rufus Punt

Will the 80s nostalgia craze ever end? Our love of big hair, bigger phones and endless cultural references of that bygone era shows no signs of slowing down- and speaking of a big-haired pop culture icon, the long awaited sequel to Beetlejuice is finally releasing later this year.

Briefly teased at the Oscars and titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it sees the ghostly trickster return to our screens for the first time in over 35 years, with Tim Burton returning to the director’s chair and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega a part of the cast. Here’s all you need to know:

‌What is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice about?

Beetlejuice first burst onto the scene in 1988, becoming an iconic fantasy horror hit and making a name out of Tim Burton. It tells the story of a ghost couple who contact a “bio-exorcist” known as Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice) to scare away the new inhabitants of their home. Talk of a sequel has been lingering for years, and now the film is finally here. Burton, who returned to direct, has united with Michael Keaton, who starred in the original and his Batman films, and Jenna Ortega, who shot to fame with the massively popular Wednesday for this new instalment. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice picks up some years after the original, focusing again on the Deetz family who we were introduced to in the form of Charles (Jeffery Jones), Delia (Catherine O’Hara) and Lydia (Winona Ryder), returning to the town of Winter River.

A new addition is Astrid (played by Ortega), daughter of Lydia, and the family, who accidentally discovers a portal to the afterlife. Not long after, someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, and before they know it, the trickster is back in action. The first teaser trailer released for the film is only brief, showing the Deetz family mourning “an unexpected family tragedy” before Astrid is seen cycling to the family home and finding the model of the village in its attic. It closes with Beetlejuice appearing, mischievously saying, “The juice is loose!” much to the shock of both Astrid and Lydia.

What else do we know?

What exactly Beetlejuice will be up to this time is being kept under wraps, but the official synopsis teases that the plot will involve “three generations of the Deetz family”, and that there’s trouble in both our world and the Afterlife. Joining Keaton, Ortega, Ryder and co. are Justin Theroux (The Mosquito Coast) who plays Rory, Monica Bellucci (The Man Who Sold His Skin) playing Beetlejuice’s wife, Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) as a ghost detective, and Burn Gorman (The Expanse) as a reverend in the town. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in cinemas on 6th September, and you can watch the trailer below.
