What Is Matthew McConaughey’s New Comedy, Brothers Actually About?
What if two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, who are already an iconic duo, were actually related? That’s the premise behind Brothers, the new Apple TV comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
The very Texan pair, who have been friends for decades and famously worked together on the hugely popular first season of True Detective, are teaming up again- but this time they aren’t pretending to be entirely different people, instead playing fictionalised versions of themselves, with the series deliberately blurring the line between their real public personas and the fictional plot. The result, it seems, is a fairly self-aware satire of themselves and actors in general.
The plot
The series plays on their well-established real-life friendship and begins when Woody’s daughter’s engagement falls apart, and the upheaval results in him packing up his family and heading to Austin, Texas, where he’s invited to stay at Matthew’s ranch.
As the two Hollywood friends- with their own respective egos- start living together, their friendship begins to be tested by their new close proximity. But this “healing getaway” for Woody becomes even stranger when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally reveals a long-buried family secret- one which suggests that Matthew and Woody could share the same father, making them, in fact, brothers. Their decades-long friendship takes on a completely different meaning, and Woody becomes determined to discover whether the extraordinary claim could actually be true.

Based on real-life events
The premise is not just based on the friendship of the two men, but also on the fact that they really did hear that they could, in fact, be related in real life. In an interview with Vanity Fair, McConaughey said: “Woody believed it from the get-go, and I don’t believe it from the get-go.”
But Brothers will also play with the careers, reputations and public image of two actors who are well known for their colourful personalities, while still telling a completely fictional story. Woody (apparently reflecting his real-life reaction) becomes increasingly obsessed with investigating the possibility that they are related, turning Matthew’s ranch upside down as he searches for answers. Matthew, meanwhile, has his own rather significant conundrum to deal with: the possibility of running for Governor of Texas, an ambition he’s been building towards. Again, this is somewhat based in reality, as McConaughey has dabbled in and hinted at political activities.
The cast
Beyond its two headline stars are Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe, with Holland Taylor appearing as Ma Mac.
The series comes from writer and producer Lee Eisenberg, who serves as showrunner and executive producer after previously working on shows including The Office and WeCrashed. McConaughey and Harrelson are also executive producers.
The most promising thing about the show, other than the fact that it’s a reunion for True Detective aficionados, is that if done right, it looks like it could be a genuinely fun look at the real lives and personalities of Hollywood A-listers- something along the lines of Being John Malkovich. In the same Vanity Fair article, McConaughey explained that both stars had to pull back from portraying themselves accurately and “not be afraid of playing slight parodies of certain expectations of ourselves, and with our relationships with each other… … so when we took the bridle off of sticking to what’s so great about the reality, I think that’s when we started to lean into just a little bit higher comedy.”
Release date
Brothers will consist of eight episodes, with the first two arriving on Apple TV on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, followed by one new episode every Wednesday until November 4. Will it live up to its very meta and potentially very funny ambitions? You’ll have to see for yourself when it premieres.
