If there was one series last year we were all sad to see end, it was Channel 4’s brilliant comedy-drama Derry Girls. The Northern Ireland-set series catapulted its young lead actresses to become recognisable faces across the U.K. and Ireland, and one of the biggest breakouts was Nicola Coughlan, who played Clare. She’s not only set to take centre stage in the upcoming third season of Bridgerton and appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie but she’s also leading Big Mood, Channel 4’s newest comedy offering, opposite It’s A Sin’s Lydia West.

Here’s Everything We Know About Big Mood

Big Mood is written and created by playwright Camilla Whitehill as her first major TV series, and centres around two best friends played by our leads: Maggie (Coughlan) and Eddie (West). They’ve been BFFs for ten years, supporting each other and always being there for each other whatever the situation. But the pair are now trying to keep on top of their own lives and careers, and things become more difficult to balance.

To add to the issues, Maggie’s recurrent difficulties with bipolar disorder have worsened recently, putting the friendship under strain as Eddie wonders if the two staying in this friendship is for the best for both of them. Now in their thirties and facing a muddle of questions, the two are unsure whether their friendship will survive.

The series deals with issues surrounding mental health and how it can affect relations with others. West commented in the Channel 4 press release that “[the] writing is genius, and the subject explores the mental health struggles that all of our generation face – coupled with how to navigate complicated, loving and nuanced friendship.”

Channel 4’s Big Mood series will also see the two trying to navigate various comedic situations together, like dealing with ineffectual and overbearing psychiatrists, creating a “Rat Hotel” in the basement, and pondering the merits of sleeping with your former history teacher. Production on the series is in full swing, and the lead duo will be joined by Niamh Cusack (Death in Paradise), Eamon Farren (The Witcher), Luke Fetherston (Pandora), Kate Fleetwood (Wheel of Time) and Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones).

Channel 4 hasn’t announced a firm release date yet, but the six-part comedy is set to air later on in 2023 and be available to stream.
